The most famous action for the 506th on D-Day was the Brécourt Manor Assault.

Later, on the morning of June 6, he was also eager to join Richard Winters in assaulting a group of four 105mm Howitzers at Brécourt Manor.

During the company's action at Brécourt Manor, Compton and others, under the leadership of Lieutenant Richard Winters, assaulted a German battery of four 88 mm multipurpose field guns firing on Utah Beach, disabling the guns and routing the enemy.

After the four guns were disabled, Winters ' team came under heavy machine-gun fire from Brécourt Manor and withdrew.
