One of the earliest examples of almost modern factory layout, designed for easy material handling, was the Bridgewater Foundry.

He moved to Patricroft, an area of the town of Eccles, Lancashire, where in August 1836, he and his business partner Holbrook Gaskell opened the Bridgewater Foundry, where they traded as Nasmyth, Gaskell and Company.

The Nasmyth, Gaskell and Company's Bridgewater Foundry, which began operation in 1836, was one of the earliest factories to use modern materials handling such as cranes and rail tracks through the buildings for handling heavy items.

Some of the earliest containers were those used for shipping coal on the Bridgewater Canal in England in the 1780s.

More recently, there has also been growth as Bridgewater has become more popular with New York City commuters who use Bridgewater Station on New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line or Interstate 78 East to commute to New York City.

The boater can use the Macclesfield Canal to head for Marple, and the junction with the Peak forest Canal ( and hence, via the Ashton, Rochdale and Bridgewater canal ) to complete the ' Cheshire Ring '.

The athletic teams of the Bridgewater Middle School use the Spartans nickname.

In 2008, the elementary students moved to other schools in the town of Bridgewater, and Bridgewater State College re-appropriated the building for its own use.

At the point where Deansgate and Chester Road ( A56 ) meet ( under the Bridgewater Viaduct ) the river meets the Bridgewater Canal head on, where a sluice gate ( a listed structure ) allowed water to feed the canal, until the water quality of the Medlock became too polluted for canal use.

This has not hindered its use as a school, nor as a center for voting, yet until the probation is lifted, the town of East Bridgewater may not be able to keep it properly funded without the help of the state.

In 1845, the Commonwealth finally agreed to construct the first normal state school ( Bridgewater State Normal School ) building in America becoming the educational plant for almost half a century and the first building ever erected in the United States for the preparation of teachers.

On 10 June 2006, the BBC asked for 1, 000 singers to meet, rehearse and perform the piece in the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester for what was almost certainly the largest performance of the piece in history.

The resulting Bridgewater Canal, opened in 1761, is often regarded as the first British canal of the modern era ( though the Sankey Canal has a good claim to that title ), and was a major technical triumph.

The Bridgewater Hall was one of a number of structures built in the 1990s that symbolised the transition to a new and modern Manchester.

Excavations of the large Roman industrial settlement in the suburbs of modern day Wilderspool and Stockton Heath have unearthed a Roman mask, one of only a handful found in Europe, and the first evidence of this settlement was unearthed during the early excavation of the Bridgewater Canal in Stockton Heath in 1770.

He is remembered as the father of British inland navigation and commissioned the Bridgewater Canal, said to be the first true canal in Britain and the modern world.

James Brindley, the engineer behind many of the canals in England, did his first canal work on the Trent and Mersey, though his first job in charge of construction was on the Bridgewater Canal.

He extended the Bridgewater to Runcorn, connecting it to his next major work, the Trent and Mersey Canal.

He researched ocean tides ( for which he won the Royal Medal ), published work in the disciplines of mechanics, physics, geology, astronomy, and economics, while also finding the time to compose poetry, author a Bridgewater Treatise, translate the works of Goethe, and write sermons and theological tracts.

The Bridgewater Treatises are a product of natural theology, though some of the authors managed to present their work in a fairly neutral manner.

Close to this point the Duke of Bridgewater built two tidal basins, two warehouses, a dry dock and a house, Bridgewater House, from which to supervise the work.

They could carry up to 80 tons of cargo, and this size allowed them to work along the Bridgewater Canal, the Sankey Canal and the northern parts of the Shropshire Union Canal.

East Bridgewater has its own school system for the town's approximately 2, 500 students.

West Bridgewater operates its own school system for its approximately 1, 220 students.

Bridgewater Township is governed under the Faulkner Act ( Mayor-Council ) system of municipal government, and is governed by a Mayor and a five-member Township Council.

He planned and inaugurated the Massachusetts normal school system in Lexington ( which shortly thereafter moved to Framingham ), Barre ( which shortly thereafter moved to Westfield ) and Bridgewater, and began preparing a series of annual reports, which had a wide circulation and were considered as being " among the best expositions, if, indeed, they are not the very best ones, of the practical benefits of a common school education both to the individual and to the state ".

On 3 August 1887 the Manchester Ship Canal Company had purchased the Bridgewater Navigation Company for £ 1, 710, 000, thus acquiring the Bridgewater Canal and its docks and the Mersey and Irwell system.

They also dealt with contemporary issues: Free Satpal Ram campaigned for the release of Satpal Ram from British jail ( a cause also taken up by bands such as Primal Scream ), and highlighted ( alleged ) miscarriages of justice in the British system in general: " Birmingham Six, Bridgewater Four, Crown Prosecution totting up the score / Kings Cross Two, Guildford Four, Winston Silcott, how many more?

From there, that highway replaced M-11 west to Bridgewater before turning south to Clinton ; at the same time, the remainder of M-11 was removed from the state highway system and the designation was decommissioned.

Besides flathead bronze screws, silicon bronze Stronghold nails ( made by Independent Nail & Packing Co., Bridgewater, Mass. ) are used extensively in assembly and Weldwood resorcinol glue is used in all the joints.

The factory grounds were bordered by the Bridgewater Canal and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

The opening of the Sankey Canal in 1757, followed by the Bridgewater Canal in 1761, which halved the price of coal in Liverpool and Manchester England, respectively, triggered a period of " canal mania " in Britain so that between 1760 and 1820 over one hundred canals were built.
