The Brisbane Lions is an Australian rules football club which plays in the Australian Football League ( AFL ).

The club was formed in 1996 from the merger of the Brisbane Bears and the Fitzroy Lions.

It was an important way of connecting with Melbourne-based Lions fans, many of whom had previously supported Fitzroy, and of winning over disaffected Fitzroy fans who had not started supporting the Brisbane Lions post-merger by honouring the history of the club.

The team again made it to the grand final, but were beaten by the Brisbane Lions.

The other two wins were against eventual runners-up Sydney ( in a match where Matthew Lloyd flaunted with the Sydney defence, kicking eight goals ( six of which came in the opening quarter ) and being awarded best-on-ground in a game Essendon rightfully deserved to win ) and against the team that denied them the 2001 Premiership, the Brisbane Lions ( who also were in a rebuilding phrase ).

Within a few years, with a change of coach, playing list and club president, Collingwood reached and lost consecutive grand finals in a close contest in 2002 and a " blow out " in 2003, both to the Brisbane Lions.

In recent times, rivalries have been sparked with the new interstate clubs, including Port Adelaide, and the Brisbane Lions.

During McNamee's tenure, he had drawn criticisms for holidaying in Wimbledon to compete in a legends match and after his sacking an attempt to lure Brisbane Lions star Jonathan Brown was also revealed.

Their 50-point win over the previously undefeated and top-of-the-table Brisbane Lions, was the upset of the round, along with Port Adelaide's shock win against St Kilda.

This was followed up with a 10-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba where the Demons had not won since 2006.

This included wins over the then-reigning premiers, Port Adelaide, and over then-runners up, the Brisbane Lions.

Their first premiership points came in a draw against the Brisbane Lions in Round 10, and their first win of the season didn't come until Round 12 against fellow straggler Melbourne.

In 2002 and 2003 they played in successive losing grand-finals against the Brisbane Lions.

Among the outstanding members of the Hearst cabinet whom he successfully opposed for a time were the great Arthur Brisbane, Bradford Merrill, S.S. Carvalho, and Colonel Van Hamm.

Then in the early 1980s there were major changes in the Australian brewing industry, including the merger of Castlemaine ( Brisbane ), Swan ( Perth ) and Toohey's ( Sydney ) into a national brewing group, as a result of acquisitions by Perth entrepreneur Alan Bond.

By 1976, The Saints were hiring Brisbane local halls to use as venues, or playing in " Club 76 ", their shared house in the inner suburb of Petrie Terrace.

Among the other bands constituting Australia's second wave were Johnny Dole & The Scabs, the Hellcats, and Psychosurgeons ( later known as the Lipstick Killers ) in Sydney ; The Leftovers, The Survivors, and Razar in Brisbane ; and La Femme, The Negatives, and The Babeez ( later known as The News ) in Melbourne.

These three cities formed the backbone of the burgeoning movement, but there were also other scenes in a number of cities such as Brisbane and Boston.

German missionaries settled at Zions Hill, Nundah, as early as 1837, five years before Brisbane was officially declared a free settlement.

Leyton Orient's home ground Brisbane Road is officially known as the Matchroom Stadium after club chairman Barry Hearn's sports promotion company.

Not long afterwards, the club was officially announced as the Brisbane Bears, signing recently-retired Hawthorn player Peter Knights as coach, and unveiling an innovative playing strip consisting of a gold with a maroon yoke and a triangular " BB " logo intended to represent a stylised map of the club's home state, Queensland, with the outline of a koala head appearing inside of the larger B.

No. 23 Squadron RAAF, now officially called " City of Brisbane Squadron ", received the Australian built CAC Wirraway to defend the city against air attack.

In 2008, Seven News Brisbane was officially the # 1 bulletin in Brisbane, winning all 40 ratings weeks.

But it was not until 1902 that Brisbane was officially designated a city.
