The Caledonian Steam Railway ( Brechin ) Ltd is a private limited company formed by a group of steam railway enthusiasts, the Brechin Railway Preservation Society, with the object of operating a railway service on the former Caledonian Railway line between Brechin and Montrose, Angus, Scotland.

It started its own shipping services from Gourock with a subsidiary company, the Caledonian Steam Packet Company in 1889.

The Isle of Man run was operated by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company during the summer holiday season with the last service in 1985, although Caledonian MacBrayne later experimented with a smaller vessel to the Isle of Man for a couple of seasons, which ran one return service per week.

Steam sailings have been available to the public from 1979, latterly as cruises on the Caledonian Canal.

Initially, British subjects from Australia made up the majority, but the establishment of the Caledonian Company of the New Hebrides in 1882 soon tipped the balance in favour of French subjects.

The Caledonian Railway Company was well supported by Glasgow and Edinburgh shareholders ; more than half of its shares were held in England.

Clyde sailings were operated initially by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company from Winton Pier and the Caledonian Railway from Montgomerie Pier.

The hotel was built by the former Caledonian Railway Company and opened in 1924, originally with its own railway station.

In 1846, an Act of Parliament authorised the amalgamation of the canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal, with the Forth and Clyde company paying £ 3, 400 per Monkland share, but in 1867, both concerns were taken over by the Caledonian Railway Company.

Barry was commissioned to design ( 1840 – 42 ) the facade of Pentonville ( HM Prison ), that was designed by Joshua Jebb, he added a stuccoed Italinate pilastered frontage to Caledonian Road.

The canal was designed by John Millington, who acted as engineer for the project, although the actual construction was carried out by Thomas Hughes, who had previously worked on the construction of the Caledonian Canal, the Dingwall Canal and the Union Canal, all in Scotland.

In 1842 an Act of Parliament was obtained authorising the Caledonian Railway to take over the Forth and Clyde Canal along with the Forth and Cart Canal, although this did not take effect until 1853.

Until June 2011 the pier was used daily by Caledonian MacBrayne, who ran a regular car-ferry service to Gourock and by the PS Waverley, the last surviving sea-going paddle steamer.

In 1975 British Airports Authority airport director John Mulkern, British Caledonian Airways chairman Adam Thomson and British Rail's Southern Region regional manager Bob Reid, formed the Gatwick Liaison Group to discuss matters of mutual interest.

JMC Air Services also known as JMC Air, JMC Airlines or simply JMC, was a UK charter airline formed by the merger of Caledonian Airways and Flying Colours Airlines following the purchase of Thomas Cook Group by the Carlson Leisure Group.

The islands of Unst and Fetlar are mainly formed of ultramafic and mafic igneous rocks which are interpreted to form part of an ophiolite, a section of oceanic crust from the Iapetus ocean which was destroyed during the Caledonian orogeny.

The Caledonian gained running rights over the Glasgow and South Western Railway's Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway, between Dumfries and Castle Douglas ; and hence from Castle Douglas to Portpatrick, Stranraer and Stranraer harbour over a jointly owned line, the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway, which was formed on 6 August 1885.

Caledonian operated its inaugural flight on 29 November 1961 from Gatwick, the newly formed airline's main operating base, to Barbados.
