# Between Chinese and other ethnicities: the Cantonese language posed a significant barrier for newcomers.

They speak their own Hlai language, a member of the Tai – Kadai language family, but most can understand or speak Hainanese and Mandarin — and it is also common for Li people to learn and speak Cantonese because many Li in Hainan relocate to Cantonese-speaking areas in southern mainland China near Hainan such as Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

As a group, the Cantonese are linguistically and ethnically distinct from other groups in China with migrants especially coming mostly from the Siyi and Sanyi regions ( with various variations of spoken Cantonese ) of Guangdong ; Cantonese remained the dominant language and heritage of many Chinatowns in Western countries until the 1970s.

In the past few years, the Cantonese dialect that has dominated Chinatown for decades is being rapidly swept aside by Mandarin Chinese, the national language of China and the lingua franca of most of the latest Chinese immigrants.

In Cantonese transliteration, 刘 / 劉 ( Liú ) is Lau, Lao is also transliteration of 刘 / 劉 in Min Nan and Taiwanese Minnan Chinese language, whilst Liu is a different surname, 廖, pinyin: Liào, (" Liêu " in Vietnamese ).

As Taiwanese, or any language other than Mandarin, was forbidden in the military posts, many mainlanders whose family lived in martial villages only spoke Mandarin and perhaps their home language ( e. g. Cantonese ).
