: The American style is used by most American newspapers, publishing houses and style guides in the United States and Canada ( including the Modern Language Association's MLA Style Manual, the American Psychological Association's APA Publication Manual, the University of Chicago's The Chicago Manual of Style, the American Institute of Physics's AIP Style Manual, the American Medical Association's AMA Manual of Style, the American Political Science Association's APSA Style Manual, the Associated Press ' The AP Guide to Punctuation and the Canadian Public Works ' The Canadian Style ).

Among leading style guides, the Reuters style guide, The Chicago Manual of Style, and the AP Stylebook ( since April 2010 ) all recommend " website ".

The Chicago Manual of Style in 1993 ( 14th edition ) advises: " lackboard bold should be confined to the classroom " ( 13. 14 ) whereas in 2003 ( 15th edition ) it states that " pen-faced ( blackboard ) symbols are reserved for familiar systems of numbers " ( 14. 12 ).

The Chicago Manual of Style, in its section " Words derived from proper names ", gives some examples of both lowercase and capitalized stylings, including a few terms styled both ways, and says, " Authors and editors must decide for themselves, but whatever choice is made should be followed consistently throughout a work.

This style of punctuation is common in the U. S. and Canada, and is the style usually recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style and most other American style guides.

For example, the first edition of the Chicago Manual of Style ( 1906 ) recommended placing the semicolon inside ending quotation marks.

In line with common English practice, style guides — such as the The Chicago Manual of Style — generally state that the number and percent sign are written without any space in between.

Some style guides agree with these arguments, and accept the singular " they " as grammatically correct, while others reject it ; some, such as The Chicago Manual of Style, hold a neutral position on the issue, and contend any approach used is likely to displease some readers.

The Chicago Manual of Style ( abbreviated in writing as CMS or CMOS, or verbally as Chicago ) is a style guide for American English published since 1906 by the University of Chicago Press.

What is now known as The Chicago Manual of Style was first published in 1906 under the title Manual of Style: Being a compilation of the typographical rules in force at the University of Chicago Press, to which are appended specimens of type in use ( image right ).
