The collection of odes are known as the Chuci or " Songs of the South ( Chu )".

This famous piece which is part the Chuci poetry collection is generally attributed to the authorship of Qu Yuan, an official from the Kingdom of Chu.

The Chuci consists of seventeen main sections, in standard order.

The main source sources for the earliest preserved poems are the Classic of Poetry, or Shijing and the Songs of the South ( or, Chuci ), although some individual pieces or fragments survive in other forms, for example embedded in classical histories or other literature.

The poems of the Chuci remain as a major factor in the study of Classical Chinese poetry, cultural, and linguistic history: the various poems or prose-poems influenced subsequent literature, such as the poetry of the Han Dynasty, as well as subsequent Classical Chinese poetry, in the saoti ( 騷體 ) style of prosody as seen in the " Epilog " of the Cantong qi ( the " Luanci " 亂辭 ), and as in the selected the material for inclusion into anthologies such as the Guwen Guanzhi.

Separately in southern China, the Chuci is ascribed to Qu Yuan ( c. 340-278 BCE ) and his follower Song Yu ( fl.

The ( 3rd-2nd centuries BCE ) Chuci " Songs of Chu " mentions Yinglong helping King Yu 禹, the legendary founder of the Xia Dynasty, to control the mythic Great Deluge.

Chuci can also refer to the formal style of this type of verse, and other or later chuci style verses were written in this style ; however, as a " classic " or canonical selection of specific verses the Chuci anthology has remained fixed since the Han Dynasty.

Wang Yi, the Han dynasty librarian who first compiled the Chuci, believed Peng Xian to have been a Shang dynasty official who drowned himself after his wise advice was rejected by the king.

The contents of the Chuci material are a major primary source for historical information about the culture and religious beliefs in the territorial area of the former Kingdom of Chu.
