After the waterway was de-mined by Australian Clearance Diving Team Three, Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron FOURTEEN Detachment ONE and Naval Special Clearance Team ONE of the U. S. Navy and a Royal Navy Clearance Diving Detachment and reopened, Umm Qasr played an important role in the shipment of humanitarian supplies to Iraqi civilians.

The Royal Australian Navy's Clearance Diving Teams ( CDTs ) also serve as combat divers.

When the Royal Navy left on 12 December 1971, the Far East Fleet Clearance Diving Team was replaced by the SAF Diving Center which comprised a small group of local divers tasked to look after the naval assets belonging to the then Maritime Command.

Within the Royal Navy there are two distinct types of professional military diver and although the selection process for both is similar the overall training is more extensive for the RN Clearance Diver.

The RAN's Clearance Diving Team 3 was awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation, twice awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for the periods January 1, 1968 to December 31, 1970 whilst part of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit, Pacific ( EODMUPAC ) and June 1, 1969 to November 25, 1970 as a unit of Inshore Undersea Warfare Group One ( IUWG1 ), and the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its work clearing the harbours of Vung Tau, Cam Ranh Bay, Qui Nhon, and Nha Trang between February 19 and June 30, 1967.
