Samuel Colt received a British patent for his revolver in 1835 and an American patent ( number 138 ) on February 25, 1836 for a Revolving gun, and made the first production model on March 5 of that year.

The February 25, 1836 patent was then reissued as entitled Revolving gun to Samuel Colt on October 24, 1848.

In response to these charges, Colt was commissioned as a Colonel by the state of Connecticut on May 16, 1861 in the 1st Regiment Colts Revolving Rifles of Connecticut armed with the Colt revolving rifle.
