* Chief Little Raven ( c. 1810 – 1889 ), negotiated peace between the Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne and the Comanche, Kiowa, and Plains Apache.

The years 1856 – 1858 were particularly vicious and bloody on the Texas frontier, as settlers continued to expand their settlements into the Comanche homeland, the Comancheria, and 1858 was marked by the first Texan incursion into the heart of the Comancheria, the so-called Antelope Hills Expedition, marked by the Battle of Little Robe Creek.

In 1840 at the Battle of Plum Creek and again in 1858 at the Battle of Little Robe Creek, the Tonkawa fought alongside the Texas Rangers against the Comanche.

In August, war chief Little Buffalo Hump and 500 Comanche Indians attacked Victoria, Texas, and other nearby towns, stealing horses and livestock and killing dozens of white settlers.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Barton Creek was believed to host Tonkawa and Comanche Indian camps.

The Colorado War ( 1863 – 1865 ) was an armed conflict between the United States and a loose alliance among the Kiowa, Comanche, Arapaho, and Cheyenne tribes of Native Americans ( the last two were particularly closely allied ).

A Comanche tribe came to his aid when he fell off of his horse by the Colorado River, and he lived with them for two years until he made a full recovery.

They covered his flanks and each morning two of them rode far ahead of the slow-moving column to search for Comanche and Kiowa encampments.

As the Kiowa village consisted of 176 lodges and the Comanche village of about 500 lodges, it is unlikely that the total Indian force numbered more that two fighting men per lodge or 1, 300.

Before the Comanche expanded out of present day Wyoming in the early eighteenth century, the lands now known as Comacheria was home to a multitude of tribes — most notably the Apaches.

And while with Sully's expedition later that year, Keogh was fighting Indians almost every day — indeed, it was in one such fight that his new mount, Comanche, received his first wound and, as the story goes, his name.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Comanche lifestyle required about one horse per person.

When many Comanche tried to flee the area, Ross, one of his scouts, Lieutenant Cornelius Van Camp of the 2nd Cavalry and one of his troopers chased a party of noncombatants that appeared to contain a white child.

Luckenbach was first established as a community trading post and was one of the few that never broke a peace treaty with the Comanche Indians, with whom they traded.

The expedition, led by pirate and soldier of fortune, Caleb Cobb, is ultimately a failure ; of the 200 initial adventurers, only about 40 survive, falling to starvation, bears, and Indians ( in one memorable chapter, the Comanche ignite the grasses surrounding the ranger camp, forcing rangers to jump over the edge of a canyon to escape the flames ), only to be swiftly arrested by the Mexican authorities.
