Stanley was made Constable of England by Richard III towards the end of 1483, the year in which Edward V and Richard, Duke of York ( the Princes in the Tower ) disappeared from their confinement in the Tower of London.
As Constable ( originally a position which constituted command of the royal armies ), Stanley was formally responsible for anyone who entered or left the Tower – then the most secure of royal palaces.

Constable and Warden
In July 1966 the Queen appointed Menzies to the ancient office of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle, taking official residence at Walmer Castle during his annual visits to Britain.
He was appointed Constable of Dover Castle and Warden of the Cinque Ports on 12 June 1376 and held office until 1381.
For his services, Humphrey was granted offices including Constable of Dover, Warden of the Cinque Ports on 27 November, and King's Lieutenant.
He was appointed master of the mews and falcons in 1402, Constable of England in 1403 and Warden of the East March from 1403 to 1414.
