The territory is administered from Canberra by the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport, which is also responsible for the administration of the territories of Christmas Island, Cocos ( Keeling ) Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, Jervis Bay and Norfolk Island.

The Coral Sea Islands Territory includes a group of small and mostly uninhabited tropical islands and reefs in the Coral Sea, northeast of Queensland, Australia.

The territory was created in 1969 by the Coral Sea Islands Act ( before, the area was considered part of Queensland ) and extended in 1997 to include Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs nearly 800 km further South, already in the Tasman Sea.

The outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef is the boundary between Queensland and the Coral Sea Islands Territory.

In November 2011 the Australian government announced that a protected area was planned in the Coral Sea.

These single-carrier formations would often be paired or grouped together for certain assignments, most notably the Battle of the Coral Sea and Midway.

These changes soon paid dividends, as the Allied ability to deny Japan air superiority was critical to their victories at Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal and New Guinea.

The Chesterfield Islands in the Coral Sea are also part of New Caledonia.

Initially two names were proposed: " Coral " and " Ruby ", with the latter being chosen by Matsumoto in a later email to Ishitsuka.

The Japanese had already occupied Tarawa and other islands in what is now Kiribati, but were delayed by the losses at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Two attempts by the Japanese to continue their strategic initiative and offensively extend their outer defensive perimeter in the south and central Pacific to where they could threaten Australia and Hawaii or the US West Coast were thwarted at the naval battles of Coral Sea and Midway respectively.

Various jazz and swing band recordings were issued on Coral in the 1940s.

TF 11 was originally formed around, then her sister ship until she was disabled by a Japanese torpedo in January 1942, then Lexington again for the Battle of the Coral Sea, then Saratoga after her repairs were completed.

As at Coral Sea and Midway, the ships of the two adversaries were never within sight of each other.

Coral reefs were all but destroyed by dynamite fishing, although efforts are made to restore some, especially inside the Hundred Islands National Park.

The ships in Tulagi harbor were raided by planes from USS Yorktown the following day in a prelude to the Battle of the Coral Sea.

A year later when the ban was lifted, the Ames Brothers were the first artists to record for Coral Records.

The two met as sophomores in their respective high schools ( Adkinson at Miami Edison Senior High School, Buff at Coral Gables High School ) when both were members of The Greater Miami Boys ' Drum and Bugle Corps, a 100-piece band and drill team.

: To explain the critical nature of this set-up, which would be wiped out in an instant if the least suspicion were aroused regarding it, the Battle of Coral Sea was based on deciphered messages and therefore our few ships were in the right place at the right time.
