In 1973, along with his two sons and Frederick Hyman, he created the Cousteau Society for the Protection of Ocean Life, Frederick Hyman being its first President ; it now has more than 300, 000 members.

Francine Cousteau currently continues her husband's work as the head of the Cousteau Foundation and Cousteau Society.

Having developed the diver's watch, IWC offered support to The Cousteau Society.

Its Oceanographic Museum, formerly directed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, is one of the most renowned institutions of its kind in the world.

These include: Potter's Tavern, said to have been built in the 1750s, but restored to its appearance in 1776 when it was home to The Plain Dealer, considered New Jersey's first newspaper ; Brearley ( Masonic ) Lodge, founded by General James Giles in 1795, and still active ; the so-called " Nail House " ( c. 1815 ; second build c. 1855 ), administrative home of the Cumberland Nail & Iron Works that established Bridgeton's industrial prowess in the early nineteenth century ; the first Cumberland National Bank building ( 1816 ), only the second bank chartered in New Jersey ( now part of the Bridgeton Library ); and the David Sheppard House ( 1791 ), recently restored with assistance from the Garden State Historic Trust and home to the Cousteau Coastal Center of Rutgers University since 2008.

In 2008, Rutgers opened the Cousteau Coastal Center of its Institute of Marine & Coastal Sciences in the former David Sheppard House, a base from which it coordinates cutting-edge ecological research and develops modules for environmental learning at all educational levels from elementary school upward.

Scuba diving in all its forms, including cave diving, has advanced in earnest since Cousteau introduced the Aqua-Lung in 1943.

Bouillante profits from its many coves and bays dotting the coast, and beaches such as Anse à la Barque, Petite Anse, Anse à sable and Malendure with its famous coral barrier which lodges the prestigious Réserve Cousteau.

Gagnan, employee at Air Liquide, had miniaturized and adapted a Rouquayrol-Denayrouze regulator to gas generators ( following severe fuel restrictions due to the German occupation of France ) and Cousteau suggested to adapt it again to diving, which was in 1864 its original purpose.

However, the invention of the aqualung in 1943 by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and the wetsuit in 1952 by University of California, Berkeley physicist, Hugh Bradner and its development over subsequent years led to a revolution in recreational diving.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau (; commonly known in English as Jacques Cousteau ; 11 June 1910 – 25 June 1997 ) was a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water.

Cousteau also belonged to the information service of the French Navy, and was sent on missions to Shanghai and Japan ( 1935 – 1938 ) and in the USSR ( 1939 ).

Having kept bonds with the English speakers ( he spent part of his childhood in the United States and usually spoke English ) and with French soldiers in North Africa ( under Admiral Lemonnier ), Jacques-Yves Cousteau ( whose villa " Baobab " at Sanary ( Var ) was opposite Admiral Darlan's villa " Reine "), helped the French Navy to join again with the Allies ; he assembled a commando operation against the Italian espionage services in France, and received several military decorations for his deeds.

In 1946, Cousteau and Tailliez showed the film " Épaves " to Admiral Lemonnier, and the admiral gave them the responsibility of setting up the Groupement de Recherches Sous-marines ( GRS ) ( Underwater Research Group ) of the French Navy in Toulon.

In 1949, Cousteau left the French Navy.

Romanovsky and other French scientists, including Louis Fage and Jacques Cousteau, repudiated the claim, saying that Romanovsky had in mind a much smaller amount.

Émile Gagnan ( November 1900 – 1979 ) was a French engineer and co-inventor ( together with French Navy diver Jacques-Yves Cousteau ) of the diving regulator ( a. k. a. demand-valve ) used for the first Scuba equipment (" Aqua-Lung ") in 1943.

In addition, and most importantly, the Aqua-Lung could be mounted on stronger and reliable air tanks holding up to 200 atmospheres ,< ref > Cousteau quickly describes the two Aqua-Lung prototypes used to shoot the film Épaves in 1943 Check here, on minute 3 ' 55 < nowiki ></ nowiki >, when Cousteau mentions his cylinders ' highest pressure ( in French ).</ ref > allowing extension of diving duration to more than an hour at significant depths ( including the needed time for decompression stops ).

The French and pioneer electronic musician Jean Michel Jarre released an album in 1990 called Waiting for Cousteau.

He is known for his long-running-role as SpongeBob SquarePants in the television series of the same name, as well as the live-action character Patchy the Pirate, Gary the Snail and the French narrator based on Jacques Cousteau.

He worked as the co-director and cameraman to Jacques Cousteau on the Oscar and Palme d ' Or-winning ( at the 1956 Academy Awards and Cannes Film Festival respectively ) documentary The Silent World ( 1956 ) and assisted Robert Bresson on A Man Escaped ( French title: Un condamné à mort s ' est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut, 1956 ) before making his first feature, Ascenseur pour l ' échafaud ( released in the U. K. as Lift to the Scaffold and in the U. S. originally as Frantic, later as Elevator to the Gallows ) in 1957.

While creating the GRS, Cousteau only had at his disposal the two remaining Aqua-Lung prototypes made by l ' Air Liquide in 1943.

The Aqua-Lung was invented in Paris during the winter of 1942 – 1943 by the engineer Émile Gagnan and the lieutenant de vaisseau ( ship-of-the-line lieutenant ) Jacques Cousteau, both of France.

After the war, in 1946, both men founded La Spirotechnique ( as a division of Air Liquide ) in order to mass produce and sell their invention, this time under a new 1945 patent, and known as CG45 (" C " for Cousteau, " G " for Gagnan and " 45 " for 1945 ).

Presumably, lawyers for Cousteau or L ' Air Liquide could have slowed or stopped this genericization by taking prompt action, but this seems not to have been done in Britain, where Siebe Gorman held the British rights to both the trade name and the patent.

An homage was paid to him by the city by the inauguration of a " rue du Commandant Cousteau ", a street which runs out to his native house, where a commemorative plaque was affixed.

To sell his regulator in English-speaking countries Cousteau coined the Aqua-Lung label, which was first licensed to the U. S. Divers company ( the American division of Air Liquide in the USA ) and later sold alongside with La Spirotechnique and U. S. Divers to finally constitute the name of the company itself, Aqua-Lung / La Spirotechnique, nowadays sited in Carros, near Nice.

The Calypso, the ship used by Jacques-Yves Cousteau as a mobile laboratory for oceanography, and which was sunk after a collision in the port of Singapore ( 1996 ) is now on display ( sadly rotting ) at the Maritime Museum of La Rochelle.

Jean-Michel Cousteau produced a video on a voyage to Kure which first aired in 2006.

In the same district, there is also another ecological research station under the patronage of UNESCO – Jacques-Yves Cousteau, belonging to the University of Bucharest, which also includes a museum of Bucegi Mountains fauna in a laboratory for nature protection.

Frédéric Dumas ( 1913 – 1991 ) was part of a team of three, with Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Philippe Tailliez, in which he was nicknamed Didi.

From 1945 to 1965, Dumas was also a civilian collaborator in the French Navy's Groupement de Recherches Sous-marines ( GRS or Underwater Research Group ), which was set up by Cousteau and Taillez.

Maurice Fargues was the operation's surface commander, in charge of the guide rope which allowed Cousteau and Dumas to communicate with the surface.
