Producer Richard D ' Oyly Carte brought Gilbert and Sullivan together and nurtured their collaboration.

He built the Savoy Theatre in 1881 to present their joint works ( which came to be known as the Savoy Operas ) and founded the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company, which performed and promoted Gilbert and Sullivan's works for over a century.

Not long afterwards, Richard D ' Oyly Carte was managing the Royalty Theatre, and he needed a short opera to be played as an afterpiece to Offenbach's La Périchole.

Over the next two years, Richard D ' Oyly Carte and Carl Rosa were two of several theatrical managers who negotiated with the team but were unable to come to terms.

During the run of Pinafore, Richard D ' Oyly Carte split up with his former investors.

This event cleared the way for Carte, Gilbert and Sullivan to form the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company, which then produced all of their succeeding operas.

Pinafore, the D ' Oyly Carte repertory and production system was cemented, and each opera would make use of these stock character types.

Richard D ' Oyly Carte was the booking manager for Oscar Wilde, a then lesser-known proponent of aestheticism, and dispatched Wilde on an American lecture tour in conjunction with the opera's U. S. run, so that American audiences might better understand what the satire was all about.

Richard D ' Oyly Carte ( 3 May 1844 – 3 April 1901 ) was an English talent agent, theatrical impresario, composer and hotelier during the latter half of the Victorian era.

He founded the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company and built the state-of-the-art Savoy Theatre to host the Gilbert and Sullivan operas.

The first, most important and successful was The Beggar's Opera of 1728, with a libretto by John Gay and music arranged by John Christopher Pepusch, both of whom probably influenced by Parisian vaudeville and the burlesques and musical plays of Thomas D ' Urfey ( 1653 – 1723 ), a number of whose collected ballads they used in their work.

It was first performed by the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company at the Savoy Theatre in London on 22 January 1887.

When it received its first professional revival in December 1920 in Glasgow – and then in London, in October 1921 – the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company made a number of further cuts and changes that were incorporated in scores and used in subsequent D ' Oyly Carte productions and recordings.

The revived D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company performed the work in the 1990s.

This proved a success, and in 1876 D ' Oyly Carte assembled a group of financial backers to establish the Comedy Opera Company, which was devoted to the production and promotion of family-friendly English comic opera.

Gilbert directed all the revivals during his lifetime, and after his death, the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company had exclusive performing rights to the Savoy operas until 1962.

In the winter of 1940 – 41, the D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company's scenery and costumes for Pinafore and three other operas were destroyed by German bombs during World War II.

The D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company did not allow any other professional company to present the Savoy operas in Britain until the copyrights expired at the end of 1961, although it licensed many amateur and school societies to do so, beginning in the 19th century.

Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera and many of the other British opera companies have mounted productions, as did the reconstituted D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company between 1990 and its closure in 2003.
