In October 1984, it was amended to forbid action by not only the Defense Department and the Central Intelligence Agency but all U. S. government agencies.

That information was frequently repeated by members of the Bush Administration even though then-classified reports from both the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency strongly questioned its credibility, suggesting that al-Libi was " intentionally misleading " interrogators.

A Human Rights Watch report of 1 February 2000 quotes a study made by the US Defense Intelligence Agency:

The Department also supports the foreign affairs activities of other U. S. Government entities including the Department of Defense, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency ( specifically, the Special Activities Division ), and the U. S. Agency for International Development.

By 1988, the U. S. Department of Defense ( DoD ) issued Instruction 4630. 8 ( reissued in 1992, 2002, 2004 ) stating its policy that “ all forces for joint and combined operations be supported through compatible, interoperable, and integrated Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence systems.

The Secretary's staff element is called the Office of the Secretary of Defense ( OSD ) and is composed of a Deputy Secretary of Defense ( DEPSECDEF ) and five Under Secretaries of Defense in the fields of Acquisition, Technology & Logistics ; Comptroller / Chief Financial Officer ; Intelligence ; Personnel & Readiness ; and Policy.

Even after the garrison inactivation, however, there were still two units in Darmstadt until new facilities had been constructed for them elsewhere: The 66th Military Intelligence Group at the Dagger Complex on Eberstädter Weg, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in the Nathan Hale Depot.

Also, the Defense Atomic Support Agency sponsored a long-range study at this Institute on the response of massive suspension cultures of mammalian cells to acute radiation.

This led to the eventual creation of the American Missile Defense Agency.

The American Missile Defense Agency started a no AMD treaty with Russia, Europe and the USA in July 2003.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA ) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technologies for use by the military.

Its original name was simply Advanced Research Projects Agency ( ARPA ), but it was renamed to " DARPA " ( for Defense ) in March 1972, then renamed " ARPA " again in February 1993, and then renamed " DARPA " again in March 1996.

DARPA was created as the Advanced Research Projects Agency ( ARPA ) by the Supplemental Military Construction Authorization ( Air Force ) ( Public Law 85-325 ) and Department of Defense Directive 5105. 15, in February 1958.

The agency was renamed the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA ) in 1972, and during the early 1970s, it emphasized direct energy programs, information processing, and tactical technologies.

Many of the successful programs were transitioned to the Services, such as the foundation technologies in automatic target recognition, space based sensing, propulsion, and materials that were transferred to the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization ( SDIO ), later known as the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization ( BMDO ), now titled the Missile Defense Agency ( MDA ).

However, Canada has disagreed with American policies regarding the Vietnam War, the status of Cuba, the Iraq War, Missile Defense, and the War on Terrorism.

The metaphor has been useful in helping a new generation of thought leaders to reason through new military strategies around the world, led largely by the US Department of Defense ( DoD ).
