Before its coastline was first explored by Europeans in the 16th century, Delaware was inhabited by several groups of Native Americans, including the Lenape in the north and Nanticoke in the south.

It is the first formal treaty between the United States and a Native American tribe ( the Lenape or Delaware Indians ).

Native tribes in the area included the Shawnee, Susquehannock, Gawanese, Lenape ( or Delaware ), and Nanticoke peoples.

Occupied for 10, 000 years by Native Americans, the land that would become New Jersey was overseen by clans of the Lenape or Lenni Lenape or Delaware, who farmed, fished, and hunted upon it.

In 1616 they were captured by Native Americans near the confluence of the Schuykill River and Delaware River, south of Easton, Pennsylvania.

During this period there were two distinct immigrations, one of which was by the Delaware Native Americans and the other by Anglo-Saxon colonizers.

The Delaware Native Americans immigrated to this region about 1800 to 1808 and remained until their evacuation under governmental compulsion in 1830 to the Kansas Territory.

These were the progeny of the Delaware Native Americans which the European explorers, more than two centuries before, had found in the valley of the Delaware River.

And the remainder was not surveyed until between 1846 and 1849, or barely in advance of the creation of Stone County, although long after the evacuation of the Delaware and other Native American tribes.

Around 1787, the Spanish government, who had acquired the territory from France in 1762, brought in a band of Shawnee and Delaware Native Americans, who had been friendly to the French, to help protect the settlers from the Osage.

* This Henry Schoolcraft neologism is thought to be derived from a Native American word meaning " man "— from the Delaware " leno or lenno " or the Shawnee " lenawai.

A number of Native American tribes called this area home, including the Shawnee, Miami, Delaware, Mingo, Ottawa, Cherokee, and Wyandot.

It was named for the Delaware, a Native American people who still lived in the county.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers in North America, Native American settlements appear to have been limited to the area north of the Indian River, north of what is now Bethany Beach ; even after Europeans pushed the Native Americans — mostly Nanticokes -- out of their coastal settlements in the mid-17th century, the Native Americans moved west to settle around Oak Orchard, Delaware, and in the Millsboro, Delaware, area rather than south toward what would become Bethany Beach.

One, from the Delaware River to Egg Harbor, followed an old Native American trail, which is today the Black Horse Pike.

Occupied by indigenous peoples for thousands of years, in historic times the area of modern day Red Bank was the territory of the Algonquian-speaking Lenape Native Americans, also called the Delaware by the English.

* Waterloo Village, ( located in Byram ) in Allamuchy Mountain State Park, exhibits many different time periods from a 400-year-old Lenape ( Delaware ) Native American village to a bustling port along the once prosperous Morris Canal.

They are famous for their selfless work, living as slaves among the slaves and together with the native Americans, the Delaware ( i. e. Lenni Lenape ) and Cherokee Indian tribes.

* 1781-In the midst of the American Revolutionary War, the British so feared Moravian missionary David Zeisberger and his influence among the Lenape ( also called Delaware ) and other Native Americans that they arrested him and his assistant, John Heckewelder, charging them with treason,

The original inhabitants of Wyomissing were Lenape ( Delaware ) Native Americans who lived along the banks of the Wyomissing Creek.

Soon after, the Delaware Native Americans received treaty land where Springfield ’ s Sequiota Park and the antique stores of its Galloway Village stand today.

On September 14, 350 wounded Americans were taken from the British camp at Dilworth to a newly-established hospital at Wilmington, Delaware.

A settlement along south side of Delaware Bay at Zwaanendael ( near present-day Lewes ) was attempted in 1631, but the colony was attacked and destroyed the following year by Native Americans defending their families and their homelands from European encroachments.

David Brainerd ( April 20, 1718 – October 9, 1747 ) was an American missionary to the Native Americans who had a particularly fruitful ministry among the Delaware Indians of New Jersey.

To disrupt the Americans ' plans, John Butler sent Brant and his Volunteers on a quest for provisions and to gather intelligence in the upper Delaware River valley near Minisink, New York.

On March 15, 2004, Amiga, Inc. announced that on April 23, 2003 it had transferred its rights over past and future versions of the Amiga OS ( but not over other intellectual property ) to Itec, LLC, later acquired by KMOS, Inc., a Delaware company.

Legislation had been proposed in both the House and the Senate in Delaware to designate English as the official language.

Cleveland was among the leaders in early support, but Thomas F. Bayard of Delaware, Allen G. Thurman of Ohio, Samuel Freeman Miller of Iowa, and Benjamin Butler of Massachusetts also had considerable followings, along with various favorite sons.

He won all the same states that his father had won in the election of 1800: the New England states, New Jersey, and Delaware, as well as parts of New York and a majority of Maryland.

Their cause was strengthened by the adoption of general incorporation statutes in the states in the late 19th century, most notably in New Jersey and Delaware, which allowed anyone to form corporations without any particular government grant or authorization, and thus without the government-granted monopolies that had been common in charters granted by the Crown or by acts of the legislature.

Although Thomas Jefferson had peach trees at Monticello, United States farmers did not begin commercial production until the 19th century in Maryland, Delaware, Georgia and finally Virginia.

Expansion along the Delaware River beyond Fort Nassau did not begin until the 1650s, after the takeover of the colony of New Sweden, which had been established at Fort Christina in 1638.

Eventually, the Dutch, who had maintained that their claim to Delaware arose from the colony of 1631, recaptured Delaware and incorporated the colony into the Colony of New Netherland.

This would have included all of present-day Delaware ; however, a clause in the charter granted only that part of the peninsula that had not already been colonized by Europeans by 1632.
