In fact, the Duke's two daughters from his first marriage, Princess Mary and Princess Anne, were considered to have the stronger claim by the English establishment.

Neither marriage was a success: Juan died shortly after his wedding, and young Margaret, who bore only a still-born child several months after her husband's death, was sent back to Burgundy, blamed for having failed to provide Spain with an heir ; Joanna and Philip, by contrast, produced six children, but their marriage was blighted by the Duke's infidelities and the passionate jealousy of his wife.

Howard was thus the half brother of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, the 2nd Duke's eldest son and heir by his first marriage to Agnes Tilney's cousin, Elizabeth Tilney.

He assisted in successfully negotiating the marriage of Alessandro to the emperor Charles V ’ s daughter Margaret of Parma in 1536 and for a short time Gucciardini was the most trusted advisor to Alessandro until the Duke's assassination in 1537.

One of the most notable achievements of the Duke's premiership was the arrangement of the King's marriage.

The army of the Kingdom of France, with the help of 5, 000 mercenaries from Switzerland and Italy, defeated the Breton army in 1488, and the last Duke of independent Brittany, Francis II, was forced to submit to a treaty giving the King of France the right to determine the marriage of the Duke's daughter, a 12-year-old girl, the heir to the Duchy.

The Duke's first marriage ended in 1996.

In March 1666 the Sacra Rota declared the marriage valid ; but the King ( and the House of Guise ) refused to recognize the decision, thereby preventing Mme Bossu from receiving any of the late Duke's vast fortune.

* The Habsburg Duke Ernest the Iron ( 1377 – 1424 ) is the last duke to be enthroned according to the ancient Karantanian ritual of installing dukes on the Duke's Stone.

The modern English Setter owes its appearance to Mr. Edward Laverack ( 1800 – 1877 ), who developed his own strain of the breed by careful breeding during the 19th century in England and to another Englishman, Mr. R. Purcell Llewellin ( 1840 – 1925 ), based his strain using Laverack's best dogs and outcrossed them with the Duke, Rhoebe and later Duke's littermate Kate bloodlines with the best results.

Earlier in 2010 it was revealed that the Kazakhstan President's billionaire son-in-law Timur Kulibayev paid the Duke of York's representatives £ 15m – £ 3m over the asking price – via offshore companies, for the Duke's Surrey mansion, Sunninghill Park.

In 1335 – 1406 it was under the ownership of prince Patrikiy Narymuntovich and his sons, in 1406 – 1419 the city was ruled by Great Duke's deputies, in 1419 – 1435 it belonged to prince Svitrigaila, in 1446 – 1452 to prince Vasiliy Yaroslavich, in 1452 – 1483 to Mozhaysk prince Ivan Andreyevich, in 1483 – 1505 to his son Semyon, who transferred Gomel to the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

She worked in big, prestigious London theatre companies throughout her successful career: from 1675 in the Duke's Company, 1682 – 1695 in the monopoly United Company, and from 1695 onwards as a member of the actors ' cooperative usually known as Betterton's Company, of which she was one of the original shareholders.

Although George VI's accession allocution had already declared that his first act was to create his elder brother Duke of Windsor, and that he willed his brother to be styled His Royal Highness ( HRH ) the Duke of Windsor, Letters Patent were issued in 1937 to formalise the creation of the Dukedom, and further Letters Patent were issued in May of that year to regulate the Duke's right to the attribute of Royal Highness – although the pretext of the Letters Patent was the confirmation of the style of Royal Highness upon the Duke, its actual purpose was to restrict the title to the Duke alone, so as to exclude any future wife from sharing in it.

The 1st Duke's daughters included Lady Elizabeth Cavendish ( c. 1627 – 14 June 1663 ), who married the John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater and had issue, and Lady Frances Cavendish ( before 1641 – 15 August 1678 ), who married the 2nd Earl of Bolingboke.

The coronation of Carinthian Dukes consisted of three parts: first, a ritual in the Slovene language was performed at the Prince's Stone ; then a mass was held at the cathedral of Maria Saal (); and subsequently, a ceremony took place at the Duke's Chair (, German: ), where the new Duke swore an oath in German and where he also received the homage of the estates.

The Duke's eldest son is not styled Marquess of Westminster ( which would cause confusion between the son and the father ), and so is styled Earl Grosvenor instead.

There are five other pubs in the Town Centre-The Charlotte in Station Road, the Duke of Wellington on London Road and the Crayford Arms, Duke's Head and The One Bell ( owned by Jimmy Bullard, a championship footballer ), all on or adjoining Crayford High Street.

The latter attribution has been confirmed and refined by W. L. Halstead and by Cyrus Hoy ( 1980 ), giving the subplot concerning Sir Owen the Welsh Knight and his wife Gwenthyan, as well as that concerning the Duke's sister Julia and her three foolish suitors to Haughton, leaving the main plot to Dekker and Chettle.

For example, omitted lines include the Duke's " Knowing that tender youth is soon suggested " ( 3. 1. 34 ), and Julia's " Her eyes are grey as glass, and so are mine " ( 4. 4. 189 ).

This family's legacy to the town includes street names such as Montagu Street, Millicent Crescent and Mandeville Street, as well as buildings such as the Fergus Hall ( formerly the Duke's School and Church Street PS ), and the Carlton Home ( the Duke's former townhouse, latterly a maternity hospital / nurses accommodation and now private apartments ).
