As of 2010, the ELDR is the third largest political party represented in European Union institutions, with 75 Members of the European Parliament and 8 members of the European Commission.

Since 20 July 2004, ELDR is politically represented in the European Parliament by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe ( ALDE ) parliamentary group, formed in conjunction with the European Democratic Party.

In March 1976, the Federation of Liberal and Democrat Parties in Europe was established, which gradually evolved into the ELDR Party with a matching group in the European Parliament, the Group of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party.

He resigned this post when he became President of the European Parliament on 15 January 2002 in accordance with an agreement between the European People's Party ( Christian Democrats ) and the ELDR groups at the start of the term ( in the customary two-way split of the five-year Presidency of the European Parliament ).

* 1994-onwards: a system in which the three central parties ( EPP, PES and ELDR ) have voted as much with each other as with their smaller allies, thus ' governing ' the system, and facing different oppositions from the left ( European Left and Greens and leftist euroskeptics ) and from the right ( Gaullists, British Conservatives, rightist euroskeptics and nationalists ).

Following the creation of the ALDE group in the European Parliament, which occurred half-way during the third mandate of the Committee of the Regions ( CoR ), the members of the ELDR Group in the CoR rapidly entered into talks with the CoR members belonging to the EDP Party with a view to replicating a similar arrangement within the CoR.

After the 2004 European elections the new party decided not to become a member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party ( ELDR ) nor of the European People's Party, but founded the European Democratic Party ( EDP ) together with the Union for French Democracy.

* 1989: The Liberal Party, previously part of the Union of the Democratic Centre, merged with the Popular Alliance ( AP ) and the Democratic Popular Party in the People's Party, despite People's Party is a conservative party and not a liberal party ( PP does not belong to the International Liberal or the ELDR ).

This was reflected in the Presidency of the Parliament with the terms being shared between the EPP and the ELDR, rather than the EPP and PES as before.

The party was a founding member of the European Democratic Party ( EDP ), which together with the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party ( ELDR ) form the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe ( ALDE ).

Having developed from a loose confederation of national political parties in the 1970s, the ELDR is now a recognised European political party incorporated as a non-profit association under Belgian law.

The youth wing of ELDR is the European Liberal Youth ( LYMEC ), which is predominantly based upon youth and student liberal organisations from across Europe but also contains a small number of individual members.

In addition to the formal structure of the ELDR Party, there are convened at least two Political Leaders ' Meetings a year in order to exchange views on the items on the agenda of the European Council and more general views on the European political situation.

At an extraordinary Congress in Brussels held on 30 April 2004 the day before the enlargement of the European Union, the ELDR Party incorporated itself under Belgian law and later became a European political party.

The party was a member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party ( ELDR ).

He was elected president of the ELDR group in the European Parliament in 1998 and was unanimously re-elected Group President in June 1999 following the elections to the European Parliament.

The Russian Democratic Party Yabloko had been an observer of the Liberal International since 2002, and became a full member after the ELDR Bucharest congress in October 2006.

After the elections ELDR and European Democratic Party ( EDP ) formed a new European Group named ALDE in the European parliament.

Since 1945 only one liberal party has been significant in politics at the national level: The Free Democratic Party ( Freie Demokratische Partei, member LI ), ELDR.

Two parties could be considered to embrace liberal values: the Democratic Alliance Party ( Partia Aleanca Demokratike, member LI, ELDR ) and the Unity for Human Rights Party ( Partia Bashkimi për të Drejtat e Njeriut ), which is the party of the ethnic minorities.

A small and rather unsuccessful liberal party is the Liberal Democratic Party ( Liberalno demokratska stranka, member ELDR ).

Four parliamentary liberal parties work together, the Civic Democratic Alliance ( Obcanska demokraticka alliance, member ELDR ), the Freedom Union-Democratic Union ( Unie Svobody-Demokratická unie ) and the Liberal Reform Party ( Liberální Reformní Strana ) and the Path of Change ( Cesta zmeny, member of EDP ).

* In Germany, the Free Democratic Party ( Freie Demokratische Partei, member LI, ELDR ) is a center and market liberal party.

* In Luxembourg, the Democratic Party ( Demokratesch Partei // Parti Démocratique, member LI, ELDR ) is the traditional liberal party.

* In Poland, the Democratic Party ( member ELDR ) is a centre-liberal party.

* In the Republic of Macedonia, the liberals are divided over the Liberal Democratic Party ( Liberalna Demokraticka Partija, member LI ), part of the left of center government coalition and the Liberal Party of Macedonia ( Liberalna Partija na Makedonija, member ELDR ), part of the right of center opposition coalition.

* In Switzerland, both the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland ( Freisinnig-Demokratische Partei der Schweiz // Parti Radical-Démocratique Suisse, member LI ), ELDR and the Liberal Party of Switzerland ( Liberale Partei der Schweiz // Parti Libéral Suisse, member LI ) are right of center liberal parties.

Both the major Free Democratic Party of Switzerland ( Freisinnig-Demokratische Partei der Schweiz / Parti Radical-Démocratique Suisse, member LI ), ELDR and the minor Liberal Party of Switzerland ( Liberale Partei der Schweiz // Parti Libéral Suisse, member LI ) are right of center liberal parties.

The Centre Party became a member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party ( ELDR |) at the organisation's July 2003 London Congress.

LYMEC is the official youth-wing of the ELDR Party, and holds separate votes in the statutory bodies of the ELDR Party.

The PSD is a member of the European People's Party ( EPP ) and the Centrist Democrat International, having belonged to the ELDR and the Liberal International until 1996.

In 2006, IDS joined the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party ( ELDR ).

The Reform Party has been a full member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party ( ELDR ) since December 1998.
