* Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne ( 1693 – 1768 ), a nephew of John Holles, 1st Duke, died without male issue, and his father's Laughton Barony and Baronetcy, his Earldom and his first Dukedom went extinct

Upon his death the Barony, Earldom and Marquessate of Curzon of Kedleston and the Earldom of Kedleston became extinct, whilst the Viscountcy and Barony of Scarsdale were inherited by a nephew.

Before 1226 the Barony of Kendal was connected to the Earldom or Honour of Lancaster while that of Westmorland was part of the Earldom of Carlisle.

The Viscountcy of Wellesley and the Barony and Earldom of Mornington are in the Peerage of Ireland ; the rest are in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

His second cousin twice removed ( Francis Douglas, 8th Earl of Wemyss ) succeeded to the Earldom of March, his fourth ( and also third ) cousin once removed ( Sir Charles Douglas, 5th Bt ) succeeded to the Marquessate of Queensberry, and his second cousin once removed ( Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch ) succeeded to the Dukedom of Queensberry.

The Dukedom of Montagu and Marquessate of Monthermer became extinct, the Earldom of Cardigan and its associated titles passed to his brother, and the Barony of Montagu passed to his grandson, Lord Henry Scott ( who assumed the surname " Montagu-Scott ", and on whose death the Barony became extinct ).

In 1292 his mother died, elevating the 18-year-old Robert to the Earldom of Carrick ; this had the side effect of stripping his father of his jure uxoris claim to the title and lands.

Indeed, before 1272 a hereditary and not necessarily royal Earldom of Chester had already been created several times, eventually merging in the crown each time.

* The Earldom of Gloucester ( in the beginning of 14th century ) went to full sisters of the dead earl, not to his half-sisters, though they were elder, having been born of the father's first marriage, while the earl himself was from second marriage.

Since 1301 the Earldom of Chester has always been conferred on the Princes of Wales.

Thereafter the Earldom of Arundel has been held by the Dukes of Norfolk.

The earldom of Waterford is sometimes called the " Premier Earldom of Ireland on the Roll ", as the oldest Irish earldom, that of Kildare, has been a subsidiary title of the Duke of Leinster for centuries and the Earl held the oldest Irish earldom held by anyone ranked as an Earl.

It is not clear what honours he had had, but this may have been intended to restore the ancient Earldom of Devon.

The first Earl inherited the Earldom of Pembroke in 1630 from his brother, the 3rd Earl, and the two titles have been united ever since.

The Dukedom, named for the district of Lennox in Stirling, was first created in 1581, and had formerly been the Earldom of Lennox.

From his new lands in South Wales, he tried to regain the palatine rights which had been attached to the Earldom of Pembroke, but his energies were not confined to this.

Prior to the creation of the Earldom of Ormond, the 1st earl's father had been created the first Earl of Carrick.

In 1098 Robert's younger brother Hugh died, and Robert inherited, on payment of £ 3, 000 in relief, the English properties that had been their father's, including the Rape of Arundel and the Earldom of Shrewsbury.

Lost from England to Scotland along with Carlisle was much of Cumberland and the honour of Lancaster, lands that belonged to Earl Ranulf's father and had been surrendered by agreement to Henry I of England in return for the Earldom of Chester.
