The Eldar are a race of elf like beings who inhabit the fictional universe of the game Warhammer 40, 000, a 1987 tabletop miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop, set in a dystopian science-fantasy universe.

Zoanthropes, creatures supposedly evolved by combining tyranid DNA with DNA from other psychically active races like the Eldar, are extremely powerful psykers to the point that, with the passing of the years, their bodies have devolved into little more than a overly bloated head attached to an atrophied, fetus-like body incapable of even moving on its own power, therefore requiring the creature to use its psychic abilities to levitate across the battlefield.

Whereas other armies in Warhammer 40, 000 may take to the field of battle for a variety of reasons, the Dark Eldar are depicted as venturing into ' realspace ' for the sole purpose of piratical raids.

Silvan Elves are described as being less wise than other Eldar, and some of them almost are indistinguishable from the Avari, those who never joined the Great Journey.

Of these races, a few survive today, such as the Eldar, Jokaero, Hrud, the Krork ( who, it is speculated, eventually devolved or mutated into the Orks and other Greenskins ) and to a certain extent Humans.

Its various factions and races include the Imperium of Man, a decentralized yet totalitarian interstellar empire that has ruled the vast majority of humanity for millennia, the Orks ( similar to Warhammer Fantasy Orcs ), the Eldar ( similar to Elves in Warhammer Fantasy Battle ), and Daemons ( very similar in both universes, although the precise natures of their creation and existence vary slightly ), among others.

In the sense that Warhammer 40, 000 races parallel the earlier ( and still extant ) Warhammer Fantasy Battle game, the Eldar race mirrors the Elven people.

The Slann are reputed to have created some of the major races in the Warhammer 40, 000 universe, the most notable of which are the Orks ( who are hinted to be referring to them as the Brainboyz, though the most recent publication of the Ork codex has implied that the snotling fulfilled this role ) and Eldar ( who are the only race that keeps records from the age ) who were created with their psychic abilities to take part in the war between the Necrons and the Old Ones in which they were all but wiped out by the C ' tan and the Enslaver plague.

The science fiction role-playing game Fading Suns features the fictional extraterrestrial races of the Ur-Obun and the Ur-Ukar, which are essentially science fiction renditions of elves and dark elves ( somewhat akin to the Eldar and the Dark Eldar in the setting of Warhammer 40000 mentioned above ).

Each faction has had several rule books or codexes released for them, culminating in the present 5th Edition of Warhammer 40K, which includes an individual rule book for both the Craftworld Eldar and Dark Eldar.

Further unofficial lists for groups such as the Harlequins, a faction of Eldar who used to have their own army list in earlier editions of the Warhammer 40K game, are also available online.

To date Games Workshop have produced no Eldar scenery kits, although brief descriptions have been given on how to build Eldar architecture and objectives in both the main Warhammer 40, 000 rules books and in GW's monthly magazine White Dwarf.

For instance while the Dark Elves have long existed as the main antagonist to the High Elves in Warhammer Fantasy, Games Workshop originally incorporated both High and Dark Elves ' elements into the Craftworld Eldar for the Warhammer 40, 000 universe.

The Exodites exist mainly in Warhammer 40, 000 background material and never had any specific models or army books for use in the tabletop game, however the Saim-Hann Craftworld Eldar is closely linked with the Exodites.
