Their chance came in 1630 when Ferdinand called a meeting of the Electors in Regensburg because he wanted his son, Ferdinand III, elected King of the Romans.

The dismissal of the most powerful military figure in Europe was a major victory for the Electors and Regensburg must be seen as a defeat for Ferdinand.

In 1692, as a result of the inheritance of the Palatinate by a Catholic branch of the Wittelsbach family, which threatened to upset the religious balance of the College of Electors, the number of electors was increased to nine, with a seat being granted to the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who became known as the Elector of Hanover ( the Reichstag officially confirmed the creation in 1708 ).

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour.

The Hohenzollern Electors of Brandenburg, who ruled from Berlin, were granted a royal throne by the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I in 1701.

" General Electors " is the term used in Fiji to identify citizens of voting age who belong, in most cases, to ethnic minorities.

The Constitution defines General Electors as all Fiji citizens who are not registered as being of Fijian, Indian, or Rotuman descent.

In other cases, a junior branch came to eclipse more senior lines in rank and power, e. g. the Kings of Prussia and German Emperors who were junior by primogeniture to the Counts and Princes of Hohenzollern, and the Electors and Kings of Saxony who were a younger branch of the House of Wettin than the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar.

Electors were among the princes of the Empire, but they had exclusive privileges in addition to their electoral ones which were not shared with the other princes.

While other Electors had gained other titles, becoming either Kings or Grand Duke, the Elector of Hesse-Kassel alone retained the anachronistic dignity.

The 1970 Constitution had provided for a 52-member House, with 22 ethnic Fijians, 22 Indo-Fijians, and 8 General Electors, with approximately half of each ethnic group's representatives elected by a closed electoral roll and the remainder by universal suffrage.

The General Electors ' roll has had an interesting history.

However, he had especially good relations with the Saxon Electors: both his mother-and brother-in-law wanted to ensure that Maria Amalia's husband received his rightful inheritance.

Charles V nevertheless had him immediately imprisoned, leaving the Electors upset by his haughty behaviour.

Because he had no surviving male heirs, he negotiated the Pragmatic Sanction to assure that his daughter Maria Theresia would succeed him, going so far as to pre-bribe the nine Electors but, of course, once he died they ignored their promises but kept the money, resulting in the War of the Austrian Succession.

However, three of these were Roman Catholic archbishops, and so had no formal consorts ; while of the four secular Electors, one was King of Bohemia, and his consort was always known by the more prestigious title of " Queen of Bohemia ".

In the disputes between the Electors of Cologne and Waldeck, which had begun in 1533, the Elector of Cologne claimed, among other properties, Neukirchen.

By 1663, however, Cologne had forgone its claim to the village, thus also bringing an end to the Electors ' attempts to reintroduce the Catholic faith into the community.

Throughout the 1990s, General Electors generally supported the General Voters ' Party ( a reconstitution of what had been the European faction of the now-disbanded Alliance Party ), and its successor, the United General Party, ( now the United Peoples Party ).

This was the first time that a General Electors ' representative had served in this capacity.

Those Electors present realized that they had little to gain from additional involvement in the wars.

In 1653 Philipp Wilhelm was married to Elisabeth Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt, with whom he had 17 children, including the next two Palatine Electors, John William and Charles III Philip but also Elector-Archbishop Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg.

A new constitution promulgated in 1990, following two military coups in 1987, abolished the " national " parliamentary seats elected by universal suffrage ( which had comprised almost half the House of Representatives ); all members henceforth were to be elected by enrolled voters on " communal " electoral roles that were limited to specific ethnic communities, each of which had an allocated number of seats in the House ( 37 indigenous Fijians, 27 Indo-Fijians, 1 Rotuman, and 5 General Electors ( Europeans, Chinese, Banaban Islanders, and other minorities ).

Electors were asked to vote on whether the Northern Territory should become a state with a constitution that had been approved by a Constitutional Assembly.

Wenceslaus succeeded in bringing the Electors of Brandenburg and Saxony over to his side: Albert II of Saxony signed an elector pact on 29 November 1291 that he would vote the same as Wenceslaus ; Otto IV of Brandenburg made a similar commitment.

He subsequently succeeded getting the law amended to give multiracial people the option of registering on either the General Electors ' roll or on an ethnic role ( Fijian, Indo-Fijian, or Rotuman ) on which any of their ancestors would have been entitled to enroll.
