The line was built by the Carpentersville, Elgin and Aurora Railway from a connection with the streetcar system in Elgin, Illinois and ran for four miles, terminating at the Illinois Iron and Bolt foundry on Main Street.

Elgin became a Texas Main Street city in 1990, and in 1999, 2000 and 2001 was selected as a National Main Street Community.

Main Street is a former alignment of Route 16 and connects with Route 970 in the community of Baie Verte ; this alignment was bypassed during a realignment of Route 16 around Baie Verte and Port Elgin in the 1960s.

The 1960s bypass reconnects with the original alignment of Route 16 at a T intersection with East Main Street on the east side of Port Elgin.

The original section from Aulac to Baie Verte was known as the Baie Verte Road, the section through Baie Verte and Port Elgin was known as Main Street, the section from Port Elgin to Bayfield was known as the Immigrant Road, and the section from Bayfield to Cape Tormentine ( now part of Route 955 ) was known as the Bayfield Road.

The area now consists of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, art galleries and antique stores of Staunton Street and Elgin Street.

Hong Kong taxi drivers usually regard " Soho " to mean either Staunton Street or Elgin Street.

The name Soho was first mentioned in a 1996 article in the South China Morning Post newspaper attributed to Elgin Street restaurant owner, Thomas Goetz, who came up with the acronym.

However, in 2000, Democratic Party member Kam Nai-wai wanted to see Soho formally renamed the " Elgin / Staunton Street Themed Dining Area ", and Kam and some long-term residents associated the name Soho with being a place of disrepute, with red light district associations.

The irony is Elgin Street was known in the 1860s as " Hung Mo Giu Gai ," or " Foreign Girls Street ," due to the vast number of European-staffed brothels.

For several years the Democratic Party fought an ongoing battle against the new bars and restaurants in the area, and also against formal adoption of the name " Soho ", preferring instead the descriptive " Staunton / Elgin Street Themed Dining Area " so as not to associate the area with alcohol consumption.
