The Iroquoian people had been driven away from the southern shore of Lake Erie by the powerful Iroquois Five Nations in 1654.

Prior to European settlement, Iroquoian people lived around Lakes Erie and Ontario, Algonquian peoples around most of the rest, and a variety of other indigenous nation-peoples including the Lakotan, Ojibwa, Illinois, Pottawatmie, Huron, Shawnee, Erie, Fox, Crow and Ho-Chunk ( Winnebago ).

The Iroquois conquered and absorbed the Erie tribe, who were one of the Iroquoian language family.

The Neutrals, also known as the Attawandaron, were an Iroquoian nation of North American native people who lived near the northern shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

The Erie were absorbed by other Iroquoian tribes, particularly the Seneca, and gradually lost their independent identity.

When Congress passed the Enabling Act of 1802, which authorized Ohio to begin the process of becoming a U. S. state, the language defining Ohio's northern boundary differed slightly from that used in the Northwest Ordinance: the border was to be " an east and west line drawn through the southern extreme of Lake Michigan, running east ... until it shall intersect Lake Erie or the territorial line Canada ; thence with the same, through Lake Erie to the Pennsylvania line aforesaid.

" An alternate etymology may have arisen from the Algonquin language words ronon (" nation "), or Irri-ronon (" Erie Nation ").

Thus, although the Erie decision itself does not identify specific provisions of the Constitution violated by Swift, the language of the decision implies that Swift had stolen powers reserved to the states, in violation of the Tenth Amendment.

Congress also reserved one third part of all gold, silver, lead, and copper mines to its own use, a bit of wishful thinking as regards Ohio lands .” The ordinance also said “ That three townships adjacent to Lake Erie be reserved, to be hereafter disposed of by Congress, for the use of the officers, men, and others, refugees from Canada, and the refugees from Nova Scotia, who are or may be entitled to grants of land under resolutions of Congress now existing .“ This was not possible, as the area next to Lake Erie was property of Connecticut, so the Canadians had to wait until the establishment of the Refugee Tract in 1798.

In 1784 the British Crown awarded to the Six Nations the " Haldimand Tract ", a tract of land " six miles deep from each side of the river beginning at Lake Erie and extending in that proportion to the of the said river.

The local rivers have shown more improvement though continue to have levels of mercury and other pollutants exceeding EPA limits, an exhaustive study conducted in 2007 by the University of Pittsburgh found that dangerous chemicals in fish catches were twice as high or more on the Canadian side of Lake Erie and six times higher in fish catches far upriver on the Allegheny.

This meant that the entire shoreline of Lake Erie west of Pennsylvania would have belonged to the state that was to become Ohio.

Ohio would thus be granted access to most or all of the Lake Erie shoreline west of Pennsylvania, and any other new states carved out of the Northwest Territory would have access to the Great Lakes via Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior.

Thus, it was possible that an east-west line extending east from Lake Michigan's southern tip may have intersected Lake Erie somewhere east of Maumee Bay, or worse, may not have intersected the lake at all ; the farther south that Lake Michigan actually extended, the more land Ohio would lose, perhaps even the entire Lake Erie shoreline west of Pennsylvania.

Some native ranges of the white bass are the Arkansas River, Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio, and Lake Poinsett in South Dakota White bass have also been found in rivers that flow to the Mississippi.

As the newly-formed Lake County did not have sufficient territory to meet the requirements for a county, the northern border included submerged land beneath the waters of Lake Erie.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of, all of it land, though it does have a small stream flowing northward through the village toward Lake Erie called Canadaway Creek.

The Town of Clarence was the first town to be established in Erie County ( 1808 ), and many other towns, villages, and cities have been formed from parts of this original town.

As the Algonquins gradually moved west from the Atlantic to Lake Erie, it is almost certain that they would have occupied this land at some point.

More than 400 ships have sunk in an area called " The Lake Erie Quadrangle ".

Since slavery had been abolished in Canada in 1833, but was still legal in southern states of the U. S., a Lake Erie crossing was sometimes required for fugitive slaves seeking freedom:

* In March 2008, officials of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced a rare adult American chestnut tree had been discovered in a marsh near Lake Erie.

He had been Engineer on the enlargement of the Erie canal from 1854 to 1858, Second Assistant Engineer on the New York canals from 1858 to 1862, and then Civil Engineer on the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad.

Port Jackson had been an important port on the Erie Canal and a ferry station connecting the south side of the Mohawk River to the City of Amsterdam.

Subsequently Erie County was created by removing the Towns of Willink and Clarence, both towns having been created from Cambria in Niagara County.

The village was formerly located on the Erie Canal, which has been re-routed farther north.

The town once had a station on the Binghamton branch of the Erie Lackawanna Railway, but passenger service on this branch ceased in 1971 ; the branch has since been taken over by Conrail.

Lima had also been served by the world-famous Pennsylvania Railroad's " Broadway Limited ," a high speed New York to Chicago service, the " Capital Limited ," Chicago to Washington D. C. service, via Pittsburgh, the Nickel Plate Road's " City of St. Louis ," and " Wabash Cannonball ," and the Erie Lackawanna's " Lake Cites ," which serviced New York, Cleveland, and Chicago with direct service both ways.

The tracks of the Philadelphia & Erie Railroad, however, had previously been placed in Driftwood in 1863.

Scranton had been the hub of its operations until the Erie Lackawanna merger, when it was no longer needed in this capacity ; it was another severe blow to the labor market.

It has been reported that both the Lesser and the Greater Scaup have shifted their traditional migration routes to take advantage of the presence of the Zebra Mussel ( Dreissena polymorpha ) in Lake Erie, which was accidentally introduced in the 1980s and has multiplied enormously.

It appears to have been extirpated from Lake Erie and its tributaries.

On June 22, 2002, the Newark City Subway was extended to the suburbs of Belleville and Bloomfield along what had been the former Erie Railroad Orange Branch, now under Norfolk Southern ownership.

Glacial Lake Tight is estimated to have been two-thirds the size of modern Lake Erie.
