The history of the Falkland Islands () goes back at least five hundred years, with active exploration and colonisation only taking place in the 18th century.

It would seem that the lineages of the Maned Wolf and the Falkland Islands Wolf separated in North America ; canids did not appear in South America until roughly 3 million years ago in a paleozoogeographical event called the Great American Biotic Interchange, in which the continents of North and South America were newly connected by the formation of the Isthmus of Panama.

An archipelago in the region of the Falkland Islands appeared on Portuguese maps from the early 16th century.

Following the departure of the Spanish settlers, the Falkland Islands became the domain of whalers and sealers who used the islands to shelter from the worst of the South Atlantic weather.

On 1 January 1983 the Falkland Islanders gained British citizenship under the British Nationality ( Falkland Islands ) Act 1983, and on 3 October 1985 the Constitution of the Falkland Islands was established.

A permanent local British administration and resident Magistrate exercised effective possession, enforcement of British law, and regulation of all economic, scientific and other activities in the territory, which was then governed as the Falkland Islands Dependencies.

The base at King Edward Point was expanded as a research facility in 1949 / 1950 by the British Antarctic Survey, which until 1962 was called the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey.

When Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in April 1982, Powell was given secret briefings on Privy Councillor terms on behalf of his party.

In 1982, the Welsh Guards ( CO Lieutenant-Colonel John Rickett ) formed part of the 5th Infantry Brigade of the British Task Force sent to liberate the Falkland Islands from Argentinian occupation during the Falklands War.

Of the three ex-Pan Am aircraft one was stored and the remaining two formed the backbone of the air trooping service to the Falkland Islands as Tristar C2s, carrying 267 passengers in an airline configuration.
