In July 2008, the band played in a VH1 tribute to The Who alongside Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and The Flaming Lips.

This was followed by the Unlimited Sunshine Tour, a traveling festival headlined and planned by the band and featuring Modest Mouse, De La Soul and The Flaming Lips.

In October 2005, The Flaming Lips recorded a cover of " If I Only Had a Brain " for the soundtrack of the video game Stubbs the Zombie, which features modern rock bands covering songs from the 1950s and 1960s.

Jim DeRogatis ' book Staring At Sound states that The Flaming Lips song " Kim's Watermelon Gun " is a " song that paints an impressionistic portrait of [...] Kim Deal ", whom band member Steven Drozd befriended when they met at Lollapalooza.

Flaming Star was initially to include four songs, but after Presley demanded two of the songs be removed, it ended up with only the title song and a short number at the opening birthday party scene.
