Oliver Taylor Hawkins ( born February 17, 1972 ) is an American musician, best known as the drummer of the rock band Foo Fighters.

Hawkins would eventually become the drummer for Grohl's band, Foo Fighters.

While the Foo Fighters were on break, Hawkins played in a three piece cover band, Chevy Metal, that played lesser known tracks by ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Queen, and Black Sabbath.

After Sunny Day Real Estate disbanded in 1995, Mendel and Goldsmith were invited by Dave Grohl to join his band, the Foo Fighters in 1995.

Bass Player described Mendel's style in Sunny Day Real Estate as " heavy-handed and fleet-footed, rooted in punk rock but prone to melodic flights that encircled the band ’ s airy arrangements ", and Mendel added that in his first years of the Foo Fighters he tried " to make these songs as complicated as I could and put as much bass on there as possible ".

1997: In 1997, Pat Smear announced that he was leaving Foo Fighters half way through their performance and presented his replacement, Franz Stahl, who had been a member of the band Scream with Dave Grohl.

However, shortly after releasing their second album LP2, the band broke up with members Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith joining the Foo Fighters and Jeremy Enigk embarking on a solo career.
