In one variant of The Sampo, for example, Ilmarinen goes willingly to Pohjola to forge the Sampo, not because he was tricked by Väinämöinen, but in order to redeem Väinämöinen from death.

In this adaptation, Ilmarinen reforges the Sampo, but is subsequently killed by a servant of Louhi.

This conflict culminates in the creation and theft of the Sampo, a magical artifact made by Ilmarinen ; and the subsequent mission to recapture it, and a battle which ends up splintering the Sampo and dispersing its parts around the world to parts unknown.

Louhi was the main antagonist in the Finnish-Soviet film Sampo, and was also an inspiration for a foe of Conan the Barbarian's in the Marvel comics version of the character ( no such foe ever appears in Howard's stories ), the Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light boss character Louhi the Witch of the North, the Final Fantasy XI item Louhi's Mask, and the orchestral work Louhi by the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho.

The forging and hoarding of the Sampo and its abundance by the witch Louhi inside a great mountain in the dark reaches of Pohjola ; the struggle and war by the people of the south to free the Sampo and capture it for their own needs and the subsequent shattering of the Sampo and the loss of its all-important lid ( which implies the breaking of the world tree at the north pole ) together constitute the bulk of the Kalevala material.
