* 1972 – The U. S. Supreme Court rules in the case Furman v. Georgia that arbitrary and inconsistent imposition of the death penalty violates the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments, and constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

In Chisholm v. Georgia,, the Supreme Court held that states were not immune from lawsuits by individuals due to the Supreme Court's Article III jurisdiction over them.

In Stanley v. Georgia,, the Court ruled that " f the First Amendment means anything, it means that a State has no business telling a man, sitting in his own house, what books he may read or what films he may watch.

In Coker v. Georgia,, the Court declared that the death penalty was unconstitutionally excessive for rape of a woman and, by implication, for any crime where a death does not occur.

The first significant general challenge to capital punishment that reached the Supreme Court was the case of Furman v. Georgia,.

States with capital punishment rewrote their laws to address the Supreme Court's decision, and the Court then revisited the issue in a murder case: Gregg v. Georgia,.

Some have not: in Godfrey v. Georgia,, the Supreme Court overturned a sentence based upon a finding that a murder was " outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible, and inhuman ," as it deemed that any murder may be reasonably characterized in this manner.

The Court lacked a home of its own and had little prestige, a situation not helped by the highest-profile case of the era, Chisholm v. Georgia, which was immediately repudiated by the Eleventh Amendment.

The Burger Court ( 1969 – 1986 ) expanded Griswolds right to privacy to strike down abortion laws ( Roe v. Wade ), but divided deeply on affirmative action ( Regents of the University of California v. Bakke ) and campaign finance regulation ( Buckley v. Valeo ), and dithered on the death penalty, ruling first that most applications were defective ( Furman v. Georgia ), then that the death penalty itself was not unconstitutional ( Gregg v. Georgia ).

* July 3 – Gregg v. Georgia: The Supreme Court of the United States rules that the death penalty is not inherently cruel or unusual and is a constitutionally acceptable form of punishment.

* June 29 – Furman v. Georgia: The Supreme Court of the United States rules that capital punishment is unconstitutional.

The storehouses of the Romanov Court in St. Petersburg were regarded as the largest collections of cognacs and wines in the world — much of it from the Transcaucasus region of Georgia.

These bounds were decided in the 1797 Treaty of Beaufort, and tested in the U. S. Supreme Court in the two Georgia v. South Carolina cases in 1923 and 1989.

In June 1830, a delegation led by Chief Ross defended Cherokee rights before the U. S. Supreme Court in Cherokee Nation v. Georgia.

In Worcester v. Georgia ( 1832 ), the US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that American Indian nations were " distinct, independent political communities retaining their original natural rights ," and entitled to federal protection from the actions of state governments that infringed on their sovereignty.

The United States Supreme Court in Miller v. Johnson, 515 U. S. 900 ( 1995 ), overturned a 1992 Congressional redistricting plan that had created minority majority districts in Georgia as unconstitutional gerrymander.

* Worcester v. Georgia, a 1832 U. S. Supreme Court Case

In honor of his contributions to the Los Angeles Lakers, both the Lakers and the city of Los Angeles renamed a portion of West 11th Street between Figueroa Street and Georgia Street ( now L. A. Live Way ) to Chick Hearn Court.

The statutory argument for Native American sovereignty persisted until the Supreme Court ruled in Cherokee Nation v. Georgia ( 1831 ), that ( e. g. ) the Cherokees were not a sovereign and independent nation, and therefore not entitled to a hearing before the court.

When Georgia moved to extend state laws over the Cherokee lands in 1830, the matter went to the U. S. Supreme Court.

However, in Worcester v. Georgia ( 1832 ), the Court ruled that Georgia could not impose laws in Cherokee territory, since only the national government — not state governments — had authority in Indian affairs.

The conflict between the city and the property owners came to an end on February 2, 2007 as the Georgia Court of Appeals threw out the condemnation.

The new attorney, although licensed to practice in any local trial court in the state, must separately seek admission to the Georgia Court of Appeals as well as the Georgia Supreme Court.

Hardwick appealed, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit reversed the lower court, finding that the Georgia sodomy statute was indeed an infringement upon Hardwick's Constitutional rights.

From 1963 to 1964, Bond served as a law clerk to the Honorable Elbert Tuttle, then Chief Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Atlanta, Georgia.

The court is based at the Elbert P. Tuttle U. S. Court of Appeals Building in Atlanta, Georgia, named for Elbert Tuttle.

The Georgia Court of Appeals heard oral argument and issued an opinion upholding the dismissal of the claims.

The environmental claim was also dismissed by Judge Smith, and the issues regarding the environmental claim are currently pending in the Georgia Court of Appeals.

The attorneys for Walker County have applied asking the Georgia Supreme Court to review the Court of Appeals decision.

Elbert Parr Tuttle ( July 17, 1897 – June 23, 1996 ), one of the " Fifth Circuit Four ", and a liberal Republican from Georgia, was chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit from 1960 to 1967, when that court became known for a series of decisions crucial in advancing the civil rights of African-Americans.

At that time, the Fifth Circuit included not only Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas ( its current jurisdiction ), but also Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Panama Canal Zone ( which were subsequently split off into the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit ).

President John F. Kennedy appointed Bell, who had been the co-chairman of Kennedy's presidential campaign in Georgia, to the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in 1961.

Attorney Gary Gerrard filed an appeal with the Georgia Court of Appeals, alleging that under Georgia law, solicitation is a felony whether or not a crime occurred.

George served as a Judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals in 1917 and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1917 to 1922.

The school was recently named a Georgia School of Excellence.

Clinch County was created on February 14, 1850, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly, and was named for General Duncan L. Clinch, a decorated United States brigadier general and Georgia Congressman who had recently died.

Southeast Georgia Health System recently opened the Outpatient Care Center on the Brunswick campus.

Also held in Lanier County is the Living Murals Celebration held in the Spring and most recently the Georgia Deep Woods Deerfest.

These early settlers were sometimes visited by the Native Americans who recently been relocated from Georgia to the Indian Territory, a few miles to the west, and who periodically came into the area on hunting expeditions.

Much of de Crevecoeur's best work has been published posthumously, most recently as More Letters from the American Farmer: An edition of the Essays in English Left Unpublished by Crèvecœur, edited by Dennis D. Moore ( Athens, Georgia: University of Georgia Press, 1995 ).

More recently one individual was seen breaching between the South Orkney Islands and South Georgia.

The seed exchange program ’ s most notable act may have been the introduction of cotton into the colony of Georgia and more recently, the worldwide spread of the Madagascar Periwinkle ( Catharanthus roseus ).

Given the University of Georgia School of Law's low in-state tuition of $ 14, 448, the New York Times recently completed a survey comparing starting salaries and degree costs of law schools and found " Georgia Law graduates earning some of the highest salaries in the country while their educational costs were reported among the very lowest, speaking to the quality of the education as well as the excellent return on investment provided at Georgia Law.

He also regularly acts an election monitor, most recently in the disputed Presidential elections in Ukraine and Georgia.

Several more children have been born on South Georgia: recently even aboard visiting private yachts.

In 1965 Shaffer hiked in 99 days from Maine to Springer Mountain, which had recently replaced Oglethorpe as the Trail's Georgia end, becoming the first person to complete a trip in each direction.

In 1815, Sevier died in Georgia while conducting a survey of lands Jackson had recently acquired from the Creek tribe, and was buried along the Tallapoosa River near Fort Decatur.

More recently, Georgia Traffic Engineer Martin Bretherton Jr. reviewed over 70 technical papers to find that multi-way stop signs do not typically control traffic speeds, and can create liability issues, traffic noise, pollution, enforcement problems and poor stop compliance when drivers feel that the signs have no justification.

Most recently he was awarded honorary doctorates from the Tbilisi State University in Georgia ( 1999 ) and the Moscow State University for the Humanities ( 2001 ).
