The Gestapo (; abbreviation of Geheime Staatspolizei, " Secret State Police ") was the official secret police of Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe.

In addition, thousands of political prisoners throughout Germany — and from 1941, throughout the occupied territories under the Night and Fog Decree — simply disappeared while in Gestapo custody.

However, these internal departments remained and the Gestapo continued to be a department under the RSHA umbrella.

The local offices of the Gestapo, known as Stapostellen and Stapoleitstellen, answered to a local commander known as the Inspekteur der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD (" Inspector of the Security Police and Security Service ") who, in turn, was under the dual command of Referat N of the Gestapo and also his local SS and Police Leader.

Personnel assigned to these auxiliary duties were often removed from the Gestapo chain of command and fell under the authority of branches of the SS.

In September 1939, following the outbreak of World War II, Himmler formed the SS-Reichssicherheitshauptamt ( RSHA: Reich Main Security Office ) to bring the SiPo ( which included the Gestapo and Kripo ) and the SD together under one umbrella.

When Göring transferred full authority over the Gestapo to Himmler in April 1934, it immediately became an instrument of terror under the SS's purview.

On 27 September 1939 the SD and SiPo ( made up of the Gestapo and the Kripo ) were folded into the new Reich Main Security Office or SS-Reichssicherheitshauptamt ( RSHA ), which was placed under Heydrich's control.

The Gestapo, which would eventually become a semi-integrated part of the SS security forces, was at first a large " thorn in the side " to Himmler as the group was originally the Prussian state political police under the control of Hermann Göring and commanded by his protege Rudolf Diels.

The RSHA was the main office in charge of SS security services and had under its command the Sicherheitsdienst ( SD ), Kriminalpolizei ( Kripo ), and the Gestapo as well as several additional offices to handle finance, administration, and supply.

Both the SD and the Gestapo were departments under Heydrich's control who answered to Himmler as both Chief of the German Police and Reichsfuhrer-SS, but the Kripo kept a level of independence as its structure was longer-established.

He is remembered today as an emblem of the Resistance, owing mainly to his role in unifying the French resistance under de Gaulle and his courage and death at the hands of the Gestapo.

In May 1936 he was sent to the Westend hospital in Berlin-Charlottenburg because of his tuberculosis, but under Gestapo surveillance.
