Dalhousie was founded as a result of the desires of George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie, the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, to establish a non-denominational college in Halifax.

Later that year, Governor Charles Lawrence issued a decree ordering the expulsion of the Acadian population from Nova Scotia ( including recently captured areas of Acadia such as le Coude ).

To cut vital supplies to Louisbourg, Nova Scotia's Governor Charles Lawrence ordered the deportation of the French-speaking Acadian population from the area.

Ministerial responsibility was granted by Governor General Lord Elgin in 1848, first to Nova Scotia and then to Canada.

The first Canadian flag was that then used as the Flag of the Governor General of Canada, a Royal Union Flag with a shield in the centre bearing the quartered arms of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves.

The latter year he was appointed Governor of Nova Scotia, which he remained until 1863.

In the same year, the Governor General also travelled to Nova Scotia to survey the damage caused by the Halifax Explosion on 6 December ; there he met with survivors and addressed the women of the Voluntary Aid Detachment.

He was based in Nova Scotia for most of his career, though he also served as first Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba from 1870 to 1872.

He was finally appointed to the bench in June, but withdrew days later to be appointed Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia ( former Conservative Premier James W. Johnston initially received this appointment, but had to withdraw due to ill health ).

Archibald served as the 4th Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia until June 1883.

In 1888, Archibald McLelan was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.

His mother died when he was a small child, and his father remarried when he was seven, giving him as stepmother Susanna Davis, the daughter of Michael Francklin, who had been Nova Scotia's Lieutenant Governor.

The island's name was derived from Britain's Governor of Nova Scotia, Lord William Campbell, and was mixed with " bello " from the French, Spanish and Italian origins of the word " beautiful ".

When US troops withdew from Grenada in December 1983 Nicholas Braithwaite of the National Democratic Congress was appointed Prime Minister of an interim administration by the Governor General Sir Paul Scoon until elections could be organised.

Significant post-retirement activities of earlier Governors-General have included: Lord Tennyson was appointed Deputy Governor of the Isle of Wight ; Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson ( by now Lord Novar ) became Secretary of State for Scotland ; and Lord Gowrie became Chairman of the Marylebone Cricket Club ( Lord Forster had also held this post, before his appointment as Governor-General ).

Of the ten Australians appointed since 1965, Lord Casey, Sir Paul Hasluck and Bill Hayden were former federal parliamentarians ; Sir John Kerr was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales ; Sir Ninian Stephen and Sir William Deane were appointed from the bench of the High Court ; Sir Zelman Cowen was a vice-chancellor of the University of Queensland and constitutional lawyer ; Peter Hollingworth was the Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane ; and Major-General Michael Jeffery was a retired military officer and former Governor of Western Australia.

In 1975, Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam recommended to the Queen that Sir Colin Hannah, then Governor of Queensland, have his dormant commission revoked for having made public political statements.

Sir Charles FitzRoy ( Governor of New South Wales from 1846 – 1855 ) and Sir William Denison ( Governor of New South Wales from 1855 – 1861 ) also carried the additional title of Governor-General because their jurisdiction extended to other colonies in Australia.

Sir John Northcott, the first Australian-born person appointed as Governor ( 1946 – 1957 ). The governor is required by the Constitution Act, 1902.

Coincidentally the first Australian-born Governor, Sir John Northcott on 1 August 1946, was also the first Australian-born Governor of any state.

On Victoria obtaining responsible government in May 1855, the title of the then incumbent Lieutenant-Governor, Captain Sir Charles Hotham, became Governor.
