* Walton Ford, the American painter, has featured Great Auks in two paintings: " The Witch of St. Kilda " and " Funk Island ".

* 1877 – The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 begins in Martinsburg, West Virginia, US, when Baltimore and Ohio Railroad workers have their wages cut for the second time in a year.

* July 16 – Great railroad strike of 1877: Riots by Baltimore and Ohio Railroad railroad workers in Baltimore, Maryland lead to a sympathy strike and rioting in Pittsburgh, and a full-scale worker's rebellion in St. Louis, briefly establishing a Communist government before U. S. President Rutherford B. Hayes calls in the armed forces.

The Railroad had blasted and tunneled its way down the Weber River canyon to Ogden and around the north shore of the Great Salt Lake ( roughly paralleling modern Interstate 84 and State Route 30 ).

In the East, the progress started in Omaha, Nebraska, by the Union Pacific Railroad proceeded very quickly because of the open terrain of the Great Plains.

With the influx of dryland farming, the county soon boasted access to three major railway systems ; the Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railroad and the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad.

Today the Great Northern Railroad operates between Tate, Georgia, and the CSX interchange at Elizabeth ( Marietta ) five days a week.
