In November 2003, the university pursued a merger between UCE and Aston University-another university in Birmingham, that, according to The Guardian, " would create an institution of 32, 000 students with a £ 200m turnover ".

In 2007, The Guardian wrote that Nottingham Trent University is " one of the top places in the country for graduate employment ", and the university has significant international recognition for its work in Art and Design, Communication, Business, Cultural and Media Studies and English Language and Literature, and for its Professions allied to Medicine, French and Law.

The university is ranked 9th for physics by the Guardian University guide for 2011.

The university is ranked 88 out of 120 institutions according to the Guardian University Guide 2013 University League Table.

The most recent league tables of individual university departments in The Guardian University Guide 2012, produced by The Guardian newspaper, ranked the Business department as 15th ( out of 116 ) in the country, English as 7th ( out of 106 ), Economics as 8th ( out of 69 ) and Law as 27th ( out of 95 ).

Their LLB ( Hons ) Law was rated in the top third of undergraduate law courses in the Guardian League Tables 2013.

Their Film and Media provision ranked in the top quarter, and BA ( Hons ) in the top third, of The Guardian University League Table 2013.

Their History and Sociology provision both ranked in the top third of The Guardian University League Table 2013, while Philosophy ranked 16th.

The new management reversed this policy and in the 2013 rankings ( published in 2012 ), the University was placed 118th in the Guardian University Guide.

In 2011, it was reported in The Guardian that the Ministry of Defence planned to put the contract to operate BFBS to competitive tenders, with a new contractor operating the service from 2013.
