HK was founded by engineers Edmund Heckler, Theodor Koch, and Alex Seidel in 1949 from the remnants of the Mauser company ; the company was registered in 1950.

The MP7 is a German submachine gun manufactured by Heckler & Koch ( H & K ) and chambered for the HK 4. 6 × 30mm cartridge.

In response to this trend, Heckler & Koch designed the MP7 ( along with the now cancelled UCP pistol, which uses the same ammunition ) to penetrate body armor, but small enough to be used in place of either a pistol or a submachine gun.

The MP7 essentially operates like a scaled-down assault rifle, with the same action as Heckler & Koch's G36, a short stroke piston.

In the late 1990s the Heckler & Koch MP7 was conceptualized as the kinetic energy component of the SABR ( later XM29 ); the XM29 was put on hold, but the MP7 entered production in 2001

A Heckler & Koch MP7: the Heckler & Koch | HK MP7 is part of Germany's IdZ modernization program and is now in use with Landespolizei | police and Bundeswehr | military forces in Germany.

PDWs also usually use a special cartridge, such as the 5. 7x28mm cartridge of the FN P90 or 4. 6x30mm of the Heckler & Koch MP7, neither of which are compatible with existing pistols and rifles ( outside of FN's proprietary Five-Seven pistol in the case of the P90's 5. 7x28mm cartridge ).
