Nor is it an accident that baseball, growing into the national game in the last 75 years, has become a microcosm of American life, that learned societies such as the American Folklore Society and the American Historical Association were founded in the 1880s, or that courses in American literature, American civilization, American anything have swept our school and college curricula.

The peninsular borough's maritime heritage is acknowledged in several ways. The City Island Historical Society and Nautical Museum occupies a former public school designed by the New York City school system's turn-of-the-last-century master architect C. B. J. Snyder.

The Lansing Metropolitan Area, colloquially referred to as " Mid-Michigan ", is an important center for educational, cultural, governmental, business, and high-tech manufacturing, including two medical schools, one veterinary school, two nursing schools, two law schools, including the nation's largest law school ( Thomas M. Cooley Law School ), a Big Ten Conference university ( Michigan State ), the Michigan State Capitol, the state Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, a federal court, the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, and headquarters of four national insurance companies.

Here Historical Columbia | Columbia, a personification of the United States, leads civilization westward with American settlers, stringing telegraph wire as she sweeps west ; she holds a school book.

The first public school in Castro Valley is a designated California Historical Landmark.

The Michael White Adobe House, is located on the high school campus and houses the San Marino Historical Society archives.

On State Route 37 there is one K-12 School Building for the Baker County School System named Baker County Elementary / Middle School in 2001 as for the Old Building of school that housed the students near the Courthouse was built in the late 1960s and named East Baker School for local Black's during segregation ( now used for East Baker Historical Society & 21st Century Community Corporation, Inc .).

The Osborne County Historical Museum exhibits artifacts from local history, including antique farm equipment, period clothing and housewares, and American Indian artifacts, and maintains on site a one-room school house built in 1912.

A Save Our History grant from The History Channel provided funding to the Alstead Historical Society and several students of the local high school, who wrote and printed a book called Too Much Water, Too Much Rain, chronicling the disaster and its aftermath.

Also available is water recreation and camping at Lake Miola, a contemporary Aquatic Center in Wallace Park, the Swan River Museum, and the Miami County Historical and Genealogical Society, and a variety of events held at the Paola Community Center.

* Sturgeon Point Light Station Sanctuary Bay Sailboat Race-A fundraiser for the Alcona County Historical Society, including a community event on the beach, is held the first Saturday in August.

Greenlawn was well known for its pickle production during the 19th century as well as, to a lesser degree, potato and cabbage farms ; the principal commodity, pickles, is still celebrated by the annual Pickle Festival, held by the local Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association at the John Gardiner Farm.
