The device was developed for use as part of the Germans ' Kehl radio control transmitter system used in certain German bomber aircraft, used to guide both the rocket-boosted anti-ship missile Henschel Hs 293, and the unpowered pioneering precision-guided munition Fritz-X, against maritime and other targets.

Both the Hs 293 and Fritz-X used Straßburg radio receivers in them to send the Kehl's control signals to the ordnance's control surfaces.

These machines contributed to the Henschel Werke Hs 293 and Hs 294 guided missiles developed by the German military between 1941 and 1945, which were the precursors to the modern cruise missile.

Another major German missile development project was the anti-shipping class ( such as the Fritz X and Henschel Hs 293 ), intended to stop any attempt at a cross-channel invasion.

The first anti-ship missiles, which were developed and built by Nazi Germany, used radio command guidance, these saw some success in the Mediterranean Theater in 1943-44, sinking or heavily damaging at least 31 ships with the Henschel Hs 293 and more than seven with the Fritz X, such as the Italian battleship Roma or the cruiser.

The German Luftwaffe used the Hs 293, the Fritz X, and others, all launched from its bombers, to deadly effect against some Allied ships in the Mediterranean Sea, seriously damaging ships such as the United States Navy light cruiser off Salerno, Italy.

This was in response to actions in which Navy ships were hit by air-launched Henschel Hs 293 glide bombs and Fritz X anti-ship missiles during 1943.

A more widely-employed weapon was the Henschel Hs 293, which included wings and a rocket motor to allow the bomb to glide some distance away from the launching aircraft.

The Hs 293 was first used operationally in the Bay of Biscay against RN and RCN destroyers, sloops and frigates.

40 of those casualties were caused by a Henschel Hs 293 launched from a Do-217, which sank the USS LST-282.

In May 1945, the US Navy " received in custody " Dr. Herbert A. Wagner, the inventor of the Hs 293 missile ; for two years, he first worked at the Special Devices Center, at Castle Gould and at Hempstead House, Long Island, New York ; in 1947, he moved to the Naval Air Station Point Mugu.

SS Bushrod Washington was hit by a glide bomb, either a Fritz-X or Hs 293, on 14 September while offloading a cargo of gasoline.

SS James W. Marshall was set afire by a conventional bomb, Hs 293 or Fritz-X on 15 September.

While an attack with a Fritz-X cannot be ruled out, there is at least an equal case to suggest that, if a glide bomb was involved, the culprit was actually a Hs 293 from II ./ KG 100 ; Luftwaffe records show that II ./ KG 100, armed only with Hs 293 glide bombs, was active over Salerno that day.

The control system used for Fritz-X, known as Kehl-Straßburg and named for Kehl, a German suburb of Strasbourg, and Strasbourg, the French / German city on the Rhine, was also used by the Hs 293.

After protests from the German discoverers, the name hassium ( Hs ) was adopted internationally in 1997.

The reaction was repeated in 1994 and the team were able to measure both alpha decay and spontaneous fission for < sup > 264 </ sup > Hs.

This reaction was studied in 2008 at RIKEN in order to conduct first spectrscopic studies of the even-even nucleus < sup > 264 </ sup > Hs.

The reaction was repeated at the FLNR in June 2008 and results show that the 4 atoms of the isotope < sup > 270 </ sup > Hs were detected with a yield of 9 pb.

Preliminary results show that a single atom of < sup > 270 </ sup > Hs was detected with a yield of 0. 8 pb.

The reaction was repeated at the GSI in Jan-Feb 2009 in order to search for the new isotope < sup > 268 </ sup > Hs.

Subsequent German wartime aircraft design took account of the discovery, evident in the slim mid-fuselage of aircraft such as the Messerschmitt P. 1112, P. 1106, and the indisputably wasp-waisted Focke-Wulf Fw 1000x3 type A long range bomber, but also apparent in delta wing designs like the Henschel Hs 135.

The KV-1's side, top, and turret armor could also be penetrated by the high-velocity MK 101 carried by German ground attack aircraft such as the Henschel Hs 129, requiring the installation of additional field-expedient appliqué armour.

The Germans also experimented with television guidance systems on the Hs 293D models.
