A particular point of tension was an open-air cross erected on the site of the house of Philippe de Gastines, a Huguenot who had been executed in 1569.

The Huguenot cross, a symbol of French Protestants, is a Maltese cross with a dove.

The name ' de Klerk ' ( literally meaning " the clerk " in Dutch ) is derived from Le Clerc, Le Clercq, and de Clercq and is of French Huguenot origin, as are a great number of other Afrikaans surnames, reflecting the French Huguenot refugees who settled in the Cape beginning in the 17th century alongside the Dutch, after they escaped religious persecution in France.

* French Huguenot Pierre de Gua is granted royal permission to settle in North America, founding the colony of Acadia.

* May – Huguenot rebellions: The huguenot city of Royan is taken by royal forces after a short siege.

* June 11 – Huguenot rebellions: The huguenot city of Nègrepelisse is taken after a short siege by royal forces.

* October 27 – Huguenot rebellions: The inconclusive Naval battle of Saint-Martin-de-Ré is fought between the Huguenot fleet of La Rochelle commanded by Jean Guiton, and a royal fleet under the command of Charles of Guise.

* June 24 – Huguenot rebellions: Saint-Jean-d ' Angély is taken after a 26 day siege by Royal forces.

* August – Huguenot rebellions: Louis XIII besieges the Huguenot city of Montauban in the Siege of Montauban, but is forced to abandon his siege two months later.

Languet is one possible candidate for the authorship of the influential Huguenot pamphlet, Vindiciae contra tyrannos ( 1579 ).

Daniel Niklaus Chodowiecki ( 16 October 1726 – 7 February 1801 ) was a Polish-German painter and printmaker with Huguenot ancestry, who is most famous as an etcher.

He was born in the city of Danzig ( Gdańsk ) in Poland, and in a letter “ in typical Berlin humor ” wrote, “ that he moved to Berlin, Germany, which shows for sure, that he is a ' genuine Pole '.” He kept close to the Huguenot scene, due to his ancestry.

The uses of these islands vary: Davids ' Island, the former location of the U. S. Army ’ s Fort Slocum, is currently unoccupied but is slated for use as passive parkland ; Glen Island is a County park for passive and active recreation ; Huckleberry Island is largely undeveloped and has one of the largest rookeries for some shore bird species in western Long Island Sound ; Columbia Island was the former site of CBS television broadcast antennas and is currently unoccupied ; Echo Island is used by a private yacht club ; Execution Rocks is the site of a 19th century lighthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places ; Pea Island is owned by Huguenot Yacht Club but remains undeveloped ; Goose Island is undeveloped ; Clifford, Harrison and Tank Islands are part of a nature preserve and city park ; and Oak and Pine Islands are used as private residences.

The source followed by most modern historians is the Huguenot refugee Élie Benoist's Histoire de l ' édit de Nantes, 3 vols.

The main provisions of the Edict of Nantes were as follows: a ) Huguenots were allowed to hold religious services in certain towns in each province, b ) They were allowed to control and fortify eight cities ( including La Rochelle and Montauban ), c ) Special courts were established to try Huguenot offenders, d ) Huguenots were to have equal civil rights with the Catholics.

Because of his mother's and his wife's Huguenot descent he was very close to the Huguenots of Berlin.

Roche, who writes in his book, The Days of the Upright, A History of the Huguenots, that " Huguenot " is:

The Catholic Church in France opposed the Huguenots, and there were incidents of attacks on Huguenot preachers and congregants as they attempted to meet for worship.

A large monument to commemorate the arrival of the Huguenots in South Africa was inaugurated on 7 April 1948 at Franschhoek, where the Huguenot Memorial Museum was erected in 1957.

In 1692 Huguenots settled on the south shore of Staten Island, New York. The present-day neighbourhood of Huguenot was named for those early settlers.

A Huguenot cemetery is located in the centre of Dublin, off St. Stephen's Green ; previous to its establishment, Huguenots used the The Cabbage Garden near the Cathedral.

The treaty confirmed the tenets of the Edict of Nantes: several Huguenot fortresses were to be razed, but the Huguenots retained control of Montauban and La Rochelle.

Joining forces, the Huguenot Catherine and Catholic Gabrielle went to work overriding the objections of powerful Catholics and Huguenots and forcing compliance with the edict.

As the expulsion of the Huguenots had taken place more than a century earlier and there were extensive Huguenot diasporas in many countries, where they often intermarried with the population of the host country, the law potentially conferred French citizenship on numerous Britons, Germans, South Africans and others – though only a fraction actually took advantage of it.

Huguenot leaders such as Condé and Coligny fled court in fear of their lives, many of their followers were murdered, and in September the Edict of Saint-Maur revoked the Huguenots ' freedom to worship.

In the cities affected the loss to the Huguenot communities after the massacres was numerically far larger than those actually killed ; in the following weeks there were mass conversions to Catholicism, apparently in response to the threatening atmosphere for Huguenots in these cities.

Constant was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, to descendants of noble Huguenots who fled France during the Huguenot wars in the early 16th century to settle in Lausanne.

Upon leaving France, Huguenots took with them knowledge of important techniques and styles — which had a significant effect on the quality of the silk, plate glass, silversmithing ( see: Huguenot silver ), watchmaking, and cabinet making industries of those regions to which they relocated.

With the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Louis XIV withdrew the privileges and toleration that Protestant Huguenots in France had been guaranteed under the edict for nearly 87 years, and ordered the destruction of Huguenot churches and the closure of Huguenot schools.

After these events, Louis XIII wished to subdue the Huguenots, and Louis ' Chief Minister Cardinal Richelieu declared the suppression of the Huguenot revolt the first priority of the kingdom.

New Rochelle, New York is named after La Rochelle, France, one of the sources of Huguenot emigration to the Dutch colony ; and New Paltz, New York, is one of the few non-urban settlements of Huguenots that did not undergo massive recycling of buildings in the usual redevelopment of such older, larger cities as New York City or New Rochelle.

On November 1, 1555, French vice-admiral Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon ( 1510 – 1575 ), who desired to help the Huguenots find a refuge against persecution, led a small fleet of two ships and 600 soldiers and Huguenot colonists, and took possession of the small island of Serigipe in the Guanabara Bay, in front of present-day Rio de Janeiro, where they built a fort named Fort Coligny.

The community received its present name circa 1860, and is named after Anna Seguine, a descendant of French Huguenots who were among the South Shore's earliest settlers ; this settlement is also responsible for the neighborhood immediately to the southwest of Annadale being named Huguenot, and the Seguine family also lends its name to Seguine Avenue, the principal north-south thoroughfare on the east side of Prince's Bay, the next neighborhood southwest of Huguenot.

The area's earliest settlers were French Huguenots, who are also responsible for another South Shore neighborhood not far away being named Huguenot.

The Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek, South Africa, is dedicated to the cultural influences that Huguenots have brought to the Cape Colony ( and ultimately the whole of South Africa ) after their immigration during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Trekboers, as they were originally known, were mainly of Dutch origin and included Calvinists, such as Flemish and Frisian Calvinists, as well as French Huguenot and German and British protestants who first arrived in the Cape of Good Hope during the period of its administration ( 1652 – 1795 ) by the Dutch East India Company ( Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC ).

Her ancestry was said to include Scots-Irish, English, Irish, French Huguenot, and American Indian ( Tuscarora ).

The two musicians used the services of the French Huguenot printer Thomas Vautrollier, who had settled in England and previously produced an edition of a collection of Lassus chansons in London ( Receuil du mellange, 1570 ).

On the one hand, France's traditional rivalry with the House of Habsburg argued in favour of intervening on behalf of the Protestant powers ( and Louis's father Henry IV of France was once a Huguenot leader ).

Though he was Presbyterian ( Calvinist, Huguenot, Puritan ), he was against the Presbyterian idea of allowing the congregation ( people ) to elect their presbyters ( church officials ) since it undermined his absolutism ( according to the Divine Right ).

In 1627, Buckingham led another failure: an attempt to aid his new Huguenot allies besieged at La Rochelle in France, by leading the Siege of Saint-Martin-de-Ré ( 1627 ).

He was the son of Peter Barré, a Huguenot refugee living in Dublin as a linen dealer, who became high sheriff of Dublin ( 1756 ).

Tensions were further raised when in May 1572 the news reached Paris that a French Huguenot army under Louis of Nassau had crossed from France to the Netherlandish province of Hainault and captured the Catholic strongholds of Mons and Valenciennes ( now in Belgium and France, respectively ).

The records of the town show that he was burned in effigy as a Huguenot and as sodomite ( 1554 ).

Against the voiced desires of Huguenot Protestants, officials of trading companies, and some native North Americans, he was granted his wish and in 1625 he sailed to Canada as a missionary, arriving on June 19, and lived with the Huron natives near Lake Huron, learning their customs and language, of which he became an expert ( it is said that he wrote the first dictionary of the Huron language ).

Achard was born in Berlin, the son of preacher Max Guillaume Achard, descendant of Huguenot refugees and his wife Marguerite Elisabeth ( Rouppert ).

In a poem in 1556 Ronsard announced that the " Brigade " had become the " Pléiade ", but apparently no one in Ronsard's literary circle used the expression to refer to himself, and use of the term stems principally from Huguenot poets critical of Ronsard's pretensions ( Ronsard was a polemicist for the royal Catholic policy ).

In August 1703, de Lamerie became the apprentice to a London goldsmith of Huguenot origin, Pierre Platel ( 1659 – 1739 ).

First mentioned during the 17th century, the Rodrigues Solitaire was described in detail by François Leguat ( leader of a group of French Huguenot refugees who were marooned on Rodrigues in 1691 – 1693 ).

Initially hosted by a community of the Huguenot diaspora, he later became the guest of a Calvinist pastor named Jonas, in whose residence he witnessed gatherings of activists in favor of German unification ( see Burschenschaft ).

French immigrants to the United States ( both those of Huguenot and those of French Canadian background ) often accommodated those unfamiliar with French pronunciations and spellings by altering their surnames in either of two ways: spellings were changed to fit the traditional pronunciation ( Pariseau became Parizo, Boucher became Bushey, Mailloux became Mayhew ), or pronunciations were changed to fit the spelling ( Benoît, pronounced, became ).

Darré was born in Belgrano, a Buenos Aires neighbourhood, in Argentina to Richard Oscar Darré, a German with Huguenot ancestry, ( born 10 March 1854, Berlin ; died 20 February 1929, Wiesbaden ) and the half-Swedish / half-German Emilia Berta Eleonore, née Lagergren ( born 23 July 1872, Buenos Aires ; died 20 July 1936, Bad Pyrmont ).

Following the failure of Henry Bennet's English colony, Port Arlington was reestablished with the settlement of Huguenot refugees following the Treaty of Limerick ( 1691 ).

Born at the Aubigné château of Saint-Maury near Pons in the present day Charente-Maritime, the son of Jean d ' Aubigné, who was implicated in the Huguenot Amboise conspiracy to kidnap the King ( 1560 ).

Of Huguenot descent, he contributed to various periodicals, and published two poems, which attracted some attention, The Descent into Hell ( 1830 ), and The Judgment of the Flood ( 1834 ).

Among them are Richelieu ( 1829 ), Philip Augustus ( 1831 ), The Huguenot ( 1838 ), Henry of Guise ( 1839 ), The Man at Arms ( 1840 ), The King's Highway ( 1840 ), The Commissioner: or, De lunatico Inquirendo ( 1843 ), Agincourt ( 1844 ) and The Smuggler ( 1845 ).

A descendant of Louis Dubois, who founded the early Huguenot settlement of New Paltz, which is preserved today as Historic Huguenot Street ( Huguenot Street Historic District ).
