A fourfold split of the same province followed at the turn of the 4th century under Diocletian — an emperor of Illyrian descent, from Dalmatia.

Another theory, proposed by Jacobsohn and supported by others, is that the name derives from the attested Illyrian locality Palaeste, whose inhabitants would have been called Palaestīnī according to normal grammatical practice.

One theory is that it derives from the Illyrian ( Venetic language ) word adur, ' water ', ' sea '.

But as the national movement matured, the Pelasgians were ousted by the Illyrian theory of Albanian origins, which could claim some support in scholarship.

The Albanians, on their part, point to the Illyrian theory of Albanian origins discussed above, as well as to the fact that Prizren was the seat of their first nationalist organization, the League of Prizren, and call the region the cradle of their national awakening.

Many scholars believe that ancient Illyrian language is a predecessor of modern Albanian, although this theory has its serious opponents.

This theory was also proposed and supported by Albanian archaeologists for the southern Illyrian tribes, while Aleksandar Stipčević says that the most convincing model of Illyrian ethnogenesis was that of autochthony, excluding Liburnians.

Venetic may also have been related to the Illyrian languages once spoken in the western Balkans, though the theory that Illyrian and Venetic were closely related is debated by current scholarship.

There are two variants of the theory: one is that the Albanians are the descendants of indigenous Illyrian tribes dwelling in what is now Albania.

The theory of an Illyrian origin of the Albanians is challenged on archaeological and linguistic grounds.

* According to linguist V. Georgiev, the theory of an Illyrian origin for the Albanians is weakened by a lack of any Albanian names before the 12th century and the relative absence of Greek influence that would surely be present if the Albanians inhabited their homeland continuously since ancient times.

Apart from the linguistic theory that Albanian is more akin to East Balkan Romance ( i. e. Dacian substrate ) than West Balkan Romance ( i. e. Illyrian / Dalmatian substrate ), Georgiev also notes that marine words in Albanian are borrowed from other languages, suggesting that Albanians were not originally a coastal people ( as the Illyrians were ).

A Thracian or Illyrian origin has been suggested, however, as yet, no theory has majority support among linguists.

Pokorny was a dedicated supporter of the Pan-Illyrian theory and located the Illyrian civilization's Urheimat between the Weser and the Vistula and east from that region where migration began around 2400 BC.

Giovanni Luppis ( or Lupis ) was born in the city of Fiume in 1813, which was at the time part of the Illyrian Provinces, but soon passed back to Austria.

Under the Treaty of Vienna, Carniola became part of the Illyrian provinces of France ( 1809 – 1814 ), with Ljubljana as its capital, and Carniola formed a part of the new territory from 1809 to 1813.

After the period of domination by Napoleon, which affected also Trieste and Gorizia, it again became part of the Austrian Empire and was included in the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom, while Gorizia was merged with the Illyrian Kingdom and Trieste, together with Istria, became part of the Austrian Coastal Region.

In Greek mythology, Illyrius was the son of Cadmus and Harmonia who eventually ruled Illyria and became the eponymous ancestor of the whole Illyrian people.

Their capital was Daorson located in Ošanići near Stolac in Herzegovina, which became the main center of classical Illyrian culture.

Grabos became the most powerful Illyrian king after the death of Bardyllis in 358 BC.

The island became part of the Roman province of Illyricum after the Illyrian Wars.

The Venetian part of the peninsula passed to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1797 with the Treaty of Campo Formio, until the period of Napoleonic rule from 1805 to 1813 when Istria became part of the Illyrian provinces of the Napoleonic Empire.

The area became part of the Roman province of Dalmatia after the Illyrian Wars ( 220 BC to 219 BC .).

In the First Illyrian War, which lasted from 229 BC to 228 BC, Rome's concern with the trade routes running across the Adriatic Sea increased after the First Punic War, when many tribes of Illyria became united under one queen, Teuta.

Polybius gives as an image of society within an Illyrian kingdom as peasant infantry fought under aristocrats which he calls in Greek Polydynastae ( Greek: Πολυδυνάστες ) where each one controlled a town within the kingdom.

Pyrrhus was only two years old when his father was dethroned, in 317 BC, his family taking refuge with Glaukias, king of the Taulantians, one of the largest Illyrian tribes.

It was founded by Ancient Greeks in the 6th century BC and named Aulōn, one of several colonies on the Illyrian coast, mentioned for the first time by Ptolemy ( Geographia, III, xii, 2 ).

This tradition of Croatian neologisms continued uninterruptedly in next centuries and is recorded in numerous Croatian dictionaries until the Illyrian movement in the 19th century when it reached the peak in works of one of the most prominent Croatian philologists, Bogoslav Šulek ( born and raised in Slovakia ).

Bardyllis created one of the most powerful Illyrian states, that of the Dardanians.

The shores of Lake Lychnidus were inhabited as early as ( 6000-2000 BC ). Lake Ohrid is one of the locations for the Illyrian tribe of the Encheleans that is near Pogradec. The area in the antiquity was at the border between Chaonia and Illyria.

The urban part of today's Zenica was formed during several specific periods which can be chronologically dated to the time of Neolithic community, Illyrian old towns ruins, Roman Municipium Bistua Nova, and the most important archaeological finding ; an early Christian double basilica dating from the 2nd to 4th century, one of two that have so far been identified in Europe.

Messapian may have been one of the Illyrian languages, which were spoken mainly on the other side of the Adriatic Sea.

The Romans annexed the southern conquests of Teuta and also one of the conditions imposed by Rome, following the war, expressly prohibited Illyrian warships south of Lissus.

Born in the small village of Cerovec in Lower Styria, Austrian Empire ( today in Slovenia ), Stanko Vraz was one of the most important figures of the Illyrian Movement in the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia.

According to one tradition, the city was named after Botone, an Illyrian king.
