The Incal is a set of science fiction comic book series written in French by Alejandro Jodorowsky and illustrated by Moebius and others.

Every major character in The Incal is based upon Tarot cards – for example, John Difool is based upon The Fool with his name being a pun upon " John, the Fool ".

The ones translated into English are John Difool avant l ' Incal, a prequel to The Incal with artwork by Zoran Janjetov, La Caste des Méta-Barons ( artwork by Juan Giménez ), which relates the history of a dynasty of perfect warriors prior to The Incal leading up to the Metabaron is the metabaron from the Incal stories.

He is currently working on a further Hip Flask volume as well Final Incal with Alejandro Jodorowsky.

The Incal was published in three volumes by Epic Comics ( a division of Marvel Comics ) as a part of their Epic Graphic Novels line, and later by Humanoids Publishing, a division of DC Comics.

A number of successful French works were published, including Bouncer, Les Terres creuses, Metabarons, The Nikopol Trilogy, Technopriests, Le Lama blanc, along with works by Pierre Christin and Enki Bilal, XXe ciel. com, The Incal, Olivier Varèse, Exterminator 17, Yves Chaland, etc .).

Humanoid Publishing selected Serbian artist Zoran Janjetov, who previously worked in the same Alejandro Jodorowsky " Incal " universe on " John Defaul " and " Technopriests ", to complete the art chores for the project.

Under the pseudonym Moebius he created a wide range of science fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative and surreal almost abstract style, the most famous of which are Arzach, the Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius, and The Incal.

In 1997, Moebius and co-creator Alejandro Jodorowsky sued Luc Besson for using The Incal as inspiration for his movie The Fifth Element, a lawsuit which they lost.

The Incal takes place in, and introduced Jodorowsky's " Jodoverse ", a fictional universe in which his science fiction comics take place.
