Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service primarily operating the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, and the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service flying the Nakajima Ki-27 and the Nakajima Ki-43, initially enjoyed great success, as these fighters generally had better range, maneuverability, speed and climb rates than their Allied counterparts.

By May, Fifth Air Force's surviving personnel and aircraft were detached to other commands and the headquarters remained unmanned for several months, but elements played a small part in the Battle of the Coral Sea ( 7 – 8 May 1942 ) when the 435th Bomb Squadron of the 19th Bomb Group saw the Japanese fleet gathering in Rabaul area nearly two weeks before the battle actually took place.

The Indian Air Force's first assault mission was carried out against Japanese troops stationed in Burma.

* April 19, 1942 The 113th Regiment of the Chinese Expeditionary Force's New 38th Division led by General Sun Li-jen attacked and defeated the encircling Japanese troops rescuing the encircled British troops and civilians.

The division fell back without difficulty, mainly because two of Yamamoto Force's battalions from the Japanese 15th Division ( II / 51 Regiment and III / 60 Regiment ) were delayed at Indaw in northern Burma by the Chindits and were unable to intervene.

Frequent air battles over Singapore occurred from 12 January 1942, the Japanese pilots being better trained and outnumbering the defenders, but ( despite widespread claims of Mitsubishi Zeros being present ), with the exception of a few Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa " Oscars " most Japanese fighters and many bombers were in no better condition than those of the Royal Air Force's.

The defeat of the 21st Brigade at Brigade Hill finally ended Maroubra Force's defence of the Kokoda Track as a cohesive fighting unit, and was a decisive victory for the Japanese.
