In week 17, the Saints defeated division rivals Carolina ; however, the Saints needed other results to break their way and when the St. Louis Rams beat the New York Jets the Saints were eliminated despite having beaten the Rams, who finished with the same record.

His defining moment came in Superbowl III when the AFL Champion Jets played the 1968 NFL Champion Baltimore Colts.

He was an American Football League All-Star in 1961, and he earned an AFL Championship ring with the New York Jets in 1968 and had the only sack of the game ; as well as a World Championship with the Jets after the 1968 season, when he was team co-captain in the Jets ' destruction of the NFL Champion Baltimore Colts.

During its final two years of existence, the AFL teams won upset victories over the NFL teams in Super Bowl III and IV, the former New York Jets victory was considered one of the biggest upsets in American sports history.

The Colts, however, were stunned by the Jets who won the game 16 – 7 in the first Super Bowl victory for the young AFL.

With the merger of the AFL and NFL the Colts and Jets were placed in the new AFC East.

However, New York went on to defeat the Raiders in the AFL Championship to advance to Super Bowl III where the Jets won what would come to be known as the Lombardi Trophy much to the fury of Raider fans.

The heavy underdog American Football League ( AFL ) champion New York Jets defeated the National Football League ( NFL ) champion Baltimore Colts by a score of 16 – 7.

Entering Super Bowl III, just like the previous two Super Bowls, many sports writers and fans believed that AFL teams did not have the same caliber of talent as NFL clubs, and thus fully expected the Colts to defeat the Jets.

He was hired by New York's AFL franchise, which had just changed its name from Titans to Jets.

The Raiders, led by head coach John Rauch, had stormed to the top of the AFL with a 13 – 1 regular season record ( their only defeat was an October 7 loss to the New York Jets, 27 – 14 ), and went on to crush the Houston Oilers, 40 – 7, in the AFL Championship game.

Despite the AFL's New York Jets winning the previous season's Super Bowl, many sports writers and fans thought it was a fluke and continued to believe that the NFL was still superior to the AFL, and thus fully expected the Vikings to defeat the Chiefs ; the Vikings entered the Super Bowl as 12. 5 to 13-point favorites.

But Dawson silenced the critics and led Kansas City to a strong finish in the playoffs, defeating the defending champion Jets in New York, 13-6 in the Divisional Playoffs, and defeating the Raiders 17-7 in the AFL Championship Game, thus essentially making the Chiefs the first wild card team to play in the Super Bowl.
