Due to its high rainfall ( 900 – 1200 mm ), mild temperatures and high mountains ( Mount Meron's elevation is 1, 000 – 1, 208 metres ), the upper Galilee region contains some unique flora and fauna: prickly juniper ( Juniperus oxycedrus ), Lebanese cedar ( Cedrus libani ), which grows in a small grove on Mount Meron, cyclamens, paeonias and Rhododendron ponticum which sometimes appears on Meron.

Atlas Cedar forms forests on mountain sides at 1, 370 to 2, 200 m, often in pure forests, or mixed with Algerian Fir-Abies numidica, Juniperus oxycedrus, Holm oak-Quercus ilex, and Acer opalus.

Juniperus oxycedrus ( Prickly Juniper, Prickly Cedar, Cade Juniper and Cade ( from the French genévrier cade ), Sharp Cedar ) is a species of juniper, native across the Mediterranean region from Morocco and Portugal, north to southern France, east to westernmost Iran, and south to Lebanon and Israel, growing on a variety of rocky sites from sea level up to 1600 m altitude.

As to be expected from the wide range, Juniperus oxycedrus is very variable.

Important tree species such as Taxodium mucronatum, Pieris ovalifolia, Juniperus virginiana, Eucalyptus eugenoides, Pinus wallichiana, Photinia lindleyana, Pinus canaariensils, Ginkgo biloba, Araucaria cunninghammi and Cupressus lawsoniana are planted all over the section.

The site includes an extensive stand of juniper Juniperus communis, privet Ligustrum vulgare, buckthorn Rhamnus catharticus, rose Rosa spp., bramble Rubus spp., wayfaring tree Viburnum lantana and hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ) and whitebeam Sorbus aria, which covers circa 20 ha to the west-facing slopes.

Juniperus drupacea is the tallest species of juniper, forming a conical tree 10-25 m tall, exceptionally up to 40 m, and with a trunk up to 1-2 m thick.

Gin is a spirit which derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries ( Juniperus communis ).

This site is most significant for the occurrence of Dwarf Juniper ( Juniperus communis ) along its ridgeline.

The section Juniperus is an obvious monophyletic group though.

Some juniper trees are misleadingly given the common name " cedar ," including Juniperus virginiana, the " red cedar " that is used widely in cedar drawers.

The seeds are mostly small and somewhat flattened, with two narrow wings, one down each side of the seed ; rarely ( e. g. Actinostrobus ) triangular in section with three wings ; in some genera ( e. g. Glyptostrobus, Libocedrus ) one of the wings is significantly larger than the other, and in some others ( e. g. Juniperus, Microbiota, Platycladus, Taxodium ) the seed is larger and wingless.
