# REDIRECT Kitt Peak National Observatory

Kitt Peak was selected by its first director, Aden B. Meinel, in 1958 as the site for a national observatory under contract with the National Science Foundation ( NSF ) and was administered by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy.

In 1982 NOAO was formed to consolidate the management of three optical observatories — Kitt Peak ; the National Solar Observatory facilities at Kitt Peak and Sacramento Peak, New Mexico ; and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile.

Kitt Peak is famous for hosting the first telescope ( an old 91 cm reflector ) used to search for near-Earth asteroids, and calculating the probability of an impact with planet Earth.

Kitt Peak hosts an array of programs for the public to take part in:

* Each night, Kitt Peak Visitor's Center hosts the Nightly Observing Program, which allows visitors to arrive in the late afternoon, watch the sunset, and use binoculars and telescopes to view the cosmos.

The project followed SARA astronomers from Ball State University to the observatory and featured time-lapse images from various points around Kitt Peak.

The universities financed the construction of the WIYN Observatory at Kitt Peak National Observatory ( KPNO ) in 1994.

This gravitational lens was discovered accidentally by Dennis Walsh, Bob Carswell, and Ray Weymann using the Kitt Peak National Observatory 2. 1 meter telescope.

In 1976, component A was itself discovered to be a binary star, using speckle interferometry and the 2. 1-meter telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.

The Tohono O ' odham Nation is also the location of the Quinlan / Baboquivari Mountains, which include Kitt Peak and the Kitt Peak National Observatory, and Telescopes and Baboquivari Peak.

Major optical observatories include Mauna Kea Observatory and Kitt Peak National Observatory in the USA, Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in Spain, and Paranal Observatory in Chile.

On Jan. 20, while the craft was still in daylight, the TV camera clearly saw two laser beams aimed at it from the night side of the crescent Earth, one from Kitt Peak National Observatory, Tucson, Arizona, and the other at Table Mountain at Wrightwood, California.

Recent images by the Hubble Space Telescope of the Helix Nebula are a composite of newly released images from the ACS instrument and the wide-angle images from the Mosaic Camera on the WIYN 0. 9-metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory.

It also operates telescopes at two additional important observatories: Kitt Peak National Observatory ( KPNO ) and Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins.

CTIO is one of two observatories managed by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory ( NOAO ), the other being Kitt Peak National Observatory ( KPNO ) near Tucson, Arizona.

A site on Kitt Peak, AZ was finally chosen for the Kitt Peak National Observatory ( KPNO ).

It was discovered in 1999 by Eric P. Rubenstein and Louis-Gregory Strolger during an observing run at Kitt Peak National Observatory ( KPNO ).

Spacewatch, which uses a 90 centimeter telescope sited at the Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona, updated with automatic pointing, imaging, and analysis equipment to search the skies for intruders, was set up in 1980 by Tom Gehrels and Dr. Robert S. McMillan of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory of the University of Arizona in Tucson, and is now being operated by Dr. McMillan.

Kitt Peak () is a mountain in the U. S. state of Arizona, and is the highest point in the Quinlan Mountains.

Its telescope, a 3. 5-meter instrument, is the newest and second largest telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.

The mountain, Kitt Peak, is part of the tribal lands of the Native American people the Tohono O ' odham.

The telescope is mounted equatorially, loosely following the design of the 4m Kitt Peak National Observatory telescope.

Ground-based radio astronomy is limited to high altitude sites such as Kitt Peak and Atacama Large Millimeter Array ( ALMA ) due to atmospheric absorption issues.

This cluster is easily visible in a Kitt Peak National Observatory image and appears starlike.

Tom Kitt ( born 11 July 1952 ) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

He is a son of Michael F. Kitt, who was a TD for various Galway constituencies ( 1948 – 1951 and 1957 – 1975 ), and a brother of Michael P. Kitt, currently a TD for Galway East.
