Ownership has continued to be held by its previous operator, the government-owned Kowloon – Canton Railway Corporation.

The British Section of the original Kowloon – Canton Railway was originally operated by a department within the Hong Kong Government.

Following the government's plan to corporatise the operation of the railway, the Kowloon – Canton Railway Corporation ( KCRC ) was established in December 1982, with the government remaining as the sole shareholder.

The British Section of the original Kowloon – Canton Railway was renamed KCR East Rail, and the LRT became KCR Light Rail.

The names " Kowloon – Canton Railway " or " KCR " has become to refer to the network operated by the KCRC.

The Kowloon – Canton Railway Corporation has submitted a detailed project proposal to the government.

The son of business tycoon Lawrence Kadoorie ( 1899 – 1993 ) and his wife, Muriel Gubbay, Michael Kadoorie was educated at Kowloon Junior School in Hong Kong as well as Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland.

These concessions included the right to construct and operate a railway from Kowloon to Canton that would link to the Peking-Hankow-Canton line.

Only after the Chinese Section was completed and opened in 1911 did traffic start to build up as people took advantage of the fast journey time of only 3 hours 40 minutes from Kowloon to Canton.

In the 1920s, Hong Kong Government decided to develop the land of east of Kowloon Tong and proper Kowloon Tsai on both sides of Kowloon – Canton Railway into a low density residential area based on the British model.

Large-scale development of Kowloon began in the early 20th century, with the construction of the Kowloon-Canton Railway and the Kowloon Wharf, but due to Kowloon's close proximity to Kai Tak Airport, building construction was limited by flight paths.

The final decision to relocate Hong Kong International Airport spurred a new series of development: Airport Railway, Ting Kau Bridge to Ting Kau and North New Territories, Tsing Ma Bridge to Ma Wan and Lantau Island, Rambler Channel Bridge to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, Duplicate Tsing Yi South Bridge on the south side of Tsing Yi Bridge.

In 1989, the Common Stored Value Ticket system was extended to Kowloon Motor Bus ( KMB ) buses providing a feeder service to MTR and KCR stations and to Citybus, and was also extended to a limited number of non-transport applications, such as payments at photobooths and for fast food vouchers.

Sha Tin Station was formerly on the main line of the Kowloon – Canton Railway ( KCR ), but since KCR's merger with the MTR, it belongs to the East Rail Line of the MTR.

By public transport take the MTR East Rail ( formerly KCR East Rail ) north from Kowloon into New Territories.

Kowloon Station ( 九龍車站 ), located in Tsim Sha Tsui on the present site of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, was the former southern terminus of the Kowloon-Canton Railway ( KCR ).

After its relocation to Hung Hom ( also replacing the old Hung Hum station ) in 1974, and until the late 1990s, " Kowloon " had been the name of present-day Hung Hom Station, the new southern terminus of the KCR, the railway which was renamed East Rail Line in the late 1990s.
