Ladin ( ), is a language consisting of a group of dialects ( which some consider part of a unitary Rhaeto-Romance language ) spoken in the Dolomite Mountains in Northern Italy in the border regions of the provinces Trentino, South Tyrol and Belluno.

Friulan ( or affectionately in Friulan, in Italian, in German, in Slovene ; also Eastern Ladin ), is a Romance language belonging to the Rhaeto-Romance family, spoken in the Friuli region of northeastern Italy.

For the same reason, speakers of Ladin, another Romance language ( spoken in eastern Switzerland in two valleys in Graubünden and northern Italy in the Trentino Alto-Ádige / Südtirol and Veneto regions ), call their own language Ladin i. e. " Latin ".

The area where Rhaeto-Romance languages ( also called Ladin languages, not to be confused with Judaeo-Spanish ) were spoken during the Middle Ages stretched from Switzerland to the Julian Alps ( in modern-day western Slovenia ).

The total number of Ladin speakers in the census of 2001 exceeds the number present of around 7, 500 in the Fascia Valley.

In the 2001 census, 16, 462 inhabitants of Trentino declared Ladin as their native language.

Ladin is officially recognised in Trentino and South Tyrol by provincial and national law.

In the last decade, the Sardinian language has been legally recognized ( with Albanian, Catalan, German, Greek, Slovene, Croatian, French, Franco-Provençal, Friulian, Ladin, and Occitan ) by the Law 482-1999, yet its actual acknowledgement in the present-day life is hard.

Ladin should not be confused with Ladino ( also called Judeo-Spanish ), which is a Romance dialect of Spanish.

It is considered by some linguists to be a variant of Ladin.

The related Solandro language is also under debate over whether it is a Ladin dialect or not.

At any rate, Nones / Solandro is not intelligible with either Val Badia / Marebbe Ladin nor with Fassan Ladin.

The name derives from Latin, because Ladin is originally a vulgar Latin language left over from the Romanized Alps.

Ladin is often attributed to be a relic of vulgar Latin dialects associated with Rhaeto-Romance languages.
