In 1797, Thompson was sent south by his employers to survey part of Canada-U. S. boundary along the water routes from Lake Superior to Lake of the Woods to satisfy unresolved questions of territory arising from the Jay Treaty between Great Britain and the United States.

All but a small part of Ontario's 2, 700 km ( 1, 677 mi ) border with the United States follows inland waterways: from the west at Lake of the Woods, eastward along the major rivers and lakes of the Great Lakes / St.

Those who fled to Canada now have descendants residing on nine small Dakota Reserves, five of which are located in Manitoba ( Sioux Valley, Long Plain, Dakota Tipi, Birdtail Creek, and Oak Lake ) and the remaining four ( Standing Buffalo, Moose Woods Cap, Round Plain, and Wood Mountain ) in Saskatchewan.

Lake of the Woods County is a county located in the U. S. state of Minnesota.

The county contains the Northwest Angle, the northernmost point of the Lower 48 States, and includes the U. S. portion of Lake of the Woods, shared with Canada.

Since Alaska has no counties, Lake of the Woods is the northernmost county in the United States.

Lake of the Woods County was named because the lake covers a large portion of the county.

In 1885 the region of Lake of the Woods got its first settler, Wilhem Zippel, who was a German immigrant and a fisherman.

Willoughby described the water as healthy and wholesome, with numerous springs, and 10, 000 alligators " more or less " in Lake Okeechobee.

The southern reaches of the county are dotted with numerous small lakes, water neither sloping towards the Souris River basin nor Lake Sakakawea.

Since the 1960s, numerous vineyards and wineries have been established again in the valley, including Summit Lake Winery in Holts Summit.

Lobes of ice from what is now Lake Michigan crossed the county, creating a deep pile of glacial soil, up to 300 feet thick, topped by numerous moraines forming small, flat watersheds with no outlets.

The attraction of Lake Guntersville has brought in numerous real estate developers.

The Lake Arrowhead Communities have numerous cultural events and organizations.

In the early decades of the 19th century ( the era of the Industrial Revolution ), numerous mills and modestly scaled factories were constructed along the East Aspetuck River, which drops precipitously between its source at Lake Waramaug and the New Preston village center, providing a robust source of water power.

The town also has the Quinnipiac River and Lake Wintergreen, as well as numerous small streams.

Canal Point is located between Lake Okeechobee and numerous sugarcane fields.

Payette Lake and the surrounding areas in McCall offer numerous recreational opportunities, and further north along US-95 is Riggins, the gateway to the Salmon River and the Seven Devils Mountains.

Another large presence in the city is the Crystal Lake Park District, which runs all of the city's numerous parks and the yearly events which take place within them.
