Maureen's son / lover Lazarus Long makes a related remark in Time Enough for Love.

He is the first in the line that includes Jubal Harshaw, Professor Bernardo de la Paz, Johann Sebastian Bach Smith, and the later life of Lazarus Long.

It is the last of the " Lazarus Long " cycle of stories, involving time travel, parallel dimensions, free love, voluntary incest, and a concept that Heinlein named pantheistic solipsism, or World as Myth — the theory that universes are created by the act of imagining them, so that somewhere ( for example ) the Land of Oz is real.

The book is a memoir of Maureen Johnson Smith Long, mother, lover, and eventual wife of Lazarus Long.

Maureen lives through, and gives her ( sometimes contradictory ) viewpoints on many events in other Heinlein stories, most notably the 1917 visit from the future by " Ted Bronson " ( in actuality Lazarus Long ), told from Long's point of view in Time Enough for Love, D. D. Harriman's space program from The Man Who Sold the Moon and the rolling roads from The Roads Must Roll.

Her sexual life story then continues featuring various boys, her husband, ministers, other women's husbands, boyfriends, swinging sessions, and the adult Lazarus Long / Theodore Bronson.

She is eventually rescued by Lazarus Long and other characters drawn from various novels in the ship " Gay Deceiver " ( from The Number of the Beast ), and after rescuing her father from certain death in the Battle of Britain, is united with her descendants in a massive group marriage in the settlement of Boondock, on the planet Tertius.

Maureen ends her memoir and the Lazarus Long saga with the phrase " And we all lived happily ever after ".

Like many of his later novels, it features Lazarus Long and Jubal Harshaw as supporting characters.

Still pursued by assassins, Campbell and Novak are rescued by an organization known as the Time Corps under the leadership of Lazarus Long.

Col. Campbell is also eventually revealed to be a son of Lazarus Long, a Heinlein character originally introduced in Methuselah's Children and who reappeared in Time Enough for Love, The Number of the Beast, and To Sail Beyond the Sunset.

Pinero is mentioned in passing in the novels Time Enough for Love and Methuselah's Children when the practically immortal Lazarus Long mentions having been examined and being sent away because the machine is " broken ".

" Slipstick " Libby became one of Heinlein's recurring characters, and would later appear in several works associated with Lazarus Long, among them Methuselah's Children and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls.

At an early point in the novel, Lazarus Long bemoans the fact that he cannot " pray for one last landing " because the " Green Hills of Earth " have deteriorated and the planet is uninhabitable.

An attempt to visit Barsoom takes them to an apparently different version of Mars seemingly under the colonial rule of the British Empire ; but near the end of the novel, Heinlein's recurring character Lazarus Long hints that they had traveled to Barsoom, and that its " colonial " status was an illusion imposed on them by the telepathically adept Barsoomians:

The book covers several periods from the life of Lazarus Long ( birth name: Woodrow Wilson Smith ), the oldest living human, now more than two thousand years old.

These were later published independently, with illustrations, as The Notebooks of Lazarus Long.

The promotional copy on the back of Time Enough for Love, the second book featuring Lazarus Long, states that Lazarus was " so in love with time that he became his own ancestor ," but this never happens in any of the published books.
