When the U. S. entered World War II in December 1941, LeMay was a major in the United States Army Air Forces ( he had been a 1st lieutenant as recently as 1940 ), and the commander of a newly created B-17 Flying Fortress unit, the 305th Bomb Group.

General Curtis LeMay had shared together during World War II, director Morris brought out complexities in the character of McNamara, which the public had not previously recognized, but which largely shaped McNamara's positions regarding both the missiles-in-Cuba issue and the Vietnam War issue, and which therefore created the historical figure that McNamara turned out to be as the U. S. Secretary of Defense.
