In March of that year, DSW Shoe Warehouse opened in part of the former Lechmere, and October 1999 brought the opening of Bally Total Fitness, with a grand opening featuring the cast of Baywatch. The Bally Total Fitness filled in the remaining part of HomePlace / Steinbach that wasn't taken by Best Buy.
In May of that year, Kaufmann's Furniture Galleries opened in the mall, in the other half of the former Lechmere.
The concrete Lechmere Viaduct leading up to the station opened on June 1, 1912.
The new alignment opened November 12, 2005, returning streetcar service to Lechmere.

Lechmere and June
The elevated tracks north of the Central Subway near North Station were closed from June 2004 until November 12, 2005 for replacement of the Causeway Street Elevated with a new tunnel under Causeway Street, still connecting to the Lechmere Viaduct.

Lechmere rail service was suspended from April 30 to November 2011 due to construction at Science Park station, with shuttle bus service between Lechmere and North Station.
As most if not all existing subway service from the south and west looped at Park Street, a new service was inaugurated between Lechmere and the Pleasant Street Incline.

The modern-day Green Line has its northern terminus at Lechmere station in eastern Cambridge.
