During its ownership by Ford, Land Rover was once again associated with Jaguar-the first time the two companies had been under the same umbrella since the British Leyland era.

The result was that although volumes held up well throughout the BMC era, market share fell as did profitability and hence investment in new models, triggering the 1966 merger with Jaguar Cars to form British Motor Holdings ( BMH ), and three years later leading to the government sponsored merger of BMH with Leyland Motor Corporation.

The company of this era is commonly called Leyland Innocenti.

The last remaining Leyland Olympians were withdrawn in 2011 and sold in early 2012, leaving the PD2 as the last remaining licenced Leyland, the end of an era as historically East Yorkshire was a Leyland fleet.

The R-Series was principally a competitor to the various Bedford chassis that were also successful during the same era, both makes being cheaper alternatives to offerings from the then market leader Leyland and later foreign imports such as Volvo and DAF.

Over 5, 000 7. 4-litre engined Leyland buses were built, but the majority of those were Tigers, mainly because the PS1 lasted longer in volume production.

Following partial nationalisation in 1975 BLMC became British Leyland ( later just BL ).

It remained in production 4 years, killed off by BMC in 1968 ( just ahead of the transition to British Leyland ) after about 6, 555 had been built.

two reasons for Leyland's decision are adduced, firstly that coachbuilders ( and not just in Farington ) were prone to take industrial action with alacrity so the closure was to set an example to the rest of Leyland Motors ' workforce, secondly that Leyland needed the space to mass-produce lorry cabs with semi-skilled labour.

In the context of BMC's wide, complex, and expensive-to-produce model range, Ford's conventionally-designed Cortina challenging for the number one spot in the domestic market, and the heavy reliance of the British economy on motor vehicle production, in 1968 the Government brokered the merger of the successful Leyland-Triumph-Rover and the struggling BMH, to form Europe's fourth-largest car maker, the British Leyland Motor Corporation ( BLMC ).

After the Leyland Motor Corporation takeover, the Rover Gas Turbine was used in a number of Leyland trucks, including one shown at the 1968 Commercial Motor Show.

The fast-growing hybrid Leyland cypress, much used in gardens, draws one of its parents from this genus ( Monterey cypress C. macrocarpa ); the other parent, Nootka cypress, is also sometimes classified in this genus, or else in the separate genus Callitropsis, but in the past more usually in Chamaecyparis.

Monterey Cypress is one of the parents of the fast growing cultivated hybrid Leyland Cypress, the other parent being Nootka Cypress.

The " City of Thousand Trades " had become over-specialised on one industry – the motor trade – much of which by the 1970s had itself consolidated into a single company – British Leyland.

It is one of the parents of the hybrid Leyland Cypress ; as the other parent, Monterey Cypress, is also in genus Cupressus, the ready formation of this hybrid is a further argument for the placement of the Nootka Cypress close to Cupressus.

At the time of launch, the company announced the intention of introducing a station wagon / estate version later that same year, and at least three, prototype station wagons ( estate cars ), which shared much of the sedan's structure and body panels but with more upright rear door frames, were built: one was broken up by Leyland Australia for examination of the body strength, one was crash tested by Ford Australia for Leyland to gain part of the registration certification and the last and only surviving example was eventually used as a factory hack until it was sold at the same auction as the Force 7s as part of a pair of cars which included the last car made.

Just before the plant closure in 1974, Leyland Australia ’ s styling department were still working on the P82 styling and one single 1 / 5 scale clay model survives of the P82 in the sedan “ short front and rear ” variant.

In 1980, KMB started to evaluate air-conditioned double-deckers, but the trial was unsuccessful and the air-conditioners of the two buses ( one Dennis Jubilant and one Leyland Victory Mk2 ) were removed in 1983.

The next year, LMC merged with British Motor Holdings ( BMH ) to become the British Leyland Motor Corporation ( BLMC ).

Later that year, the Standard name became disused by Leyland, and these models were rebranded hastily as Leyland 15 and 20.

Leyland Trucks now operates as a division of PACCAR from the Leyland Assembly Plant in North West England manufacturing around 14, 000 trucks per year of which about a third are sold in the EU, though not with the name Leyland.

That year, the Tigers made the playoffs for the first time in 19 years under manager Jim Leyland and general manager Dave Dombrowski.

From 1975 up until 1980 British Leyland supplied the Lawn Tennis Association every year with official " Wimbledon " Maxis.

However, in 1984 a secondhand Leyland Tiger coach and a former Western SMT Seddon Pennine 7 which had been fitted with a wheelchair lift arrived, and 5 of the Dennis Dorchesters delivered that year were to coach specification.

The 3500 was introduced in April 1968 ( one year after the Rover company was purchased by Triumph's owner, Leyland ) and continued to be offered until 1977.

Apart from its main plant in the Basque Country, which produces around 1000 bodies per year, Irizar also has factories in other countries: in Skhirat ( Morocco ), Tianjin ( China ), Botucatu ( Brazil ), Querétaro ( México ), Centurion ( South Africa ) and in Tamil Nadu ( India ) ( in partnership with Ashok Leyland and TVS Motors ).

The 23 year old ex Quince's 0405's, the 25 year old ex Rennie Volvo B10M MkII's and the remaining Leyland Tigers will be sold off.
