Before the start of the 1963 season, new optimism was voiced at the chances that the Lions could be a strong contender for the Grey Cup, which was to be played at Empire Stadium.

After a 2 – 1 series victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Finals, the Lions lined up in the 51st Grey Cup game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Hamilton won the 51st Grey Cup with a 21 – 10 victory, but the following year, the Lions would get their revenge.

The Double Blue returned to the Grey Cup, this time facing the BC Lions at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

Finishing the season with a 9 – 9 record, the team advanced to the playoffs defeating the BC Lions in the Eastern Semi-Final, only to lose by a close margin in the Eastern Finals to the defending Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes.

Allen won game MVP honour, but more importantly helped the Argos capture their 15th Grey Cup in a 27 – 19 win over the BC Lions.

The team then followed up with a 26 – 17 win at BC Place over the BC Lions in the West Division final to give the Roughriders a berth in their first Grey Cup final since 1997.

He also led the team to victory in the European Cup in 1967, as part of the " Lisbon Lions ", and was the first British footballer to hold aloft the European Cup.

To captain Celtic and become the first British Club to win the European Cup, the biggest prize in Club football, is a massive achievement and Billy and the other Lisbon Lions will forever be among the most important figures in Celtic's illustrious history.
